Obama: 5 dead after Rep. Giffords shot in Tucson

TUCSON, AZ - President Barack Obama says at least five people are dead and Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is fighting for her life after a shooting Saturday morning in Tucson.

Obama has sent his FBI director to oversee the investigation.

Surgeons say they're "very optimistic" about the recovery of Giffords after she was shot in the head.

Giffords is reportedly in critical condition and in surgery at University Medical Center in Tucson after being shot one time in the head just after 10 a.m. at a Safeway store near Ina and Oracle.

Latest reports are that 19 people were shot with 6 dead including a child. My DD and her family live in Tucson so I had to call and check that all was okay. The place of the shooting was not anywhere near where they live. And people are worried about going to Mexico! Another American tragedy.

Reports suggest that it was a lunatic that did the shooting, but then who in their right mind would use bullets rather than ballots in a political debate? It is a very sad situation, but hopefully she will pull through.

There is a huge difference between what happened in Tucson and what occurs everyday in Mexico.

What I was trying to say was that it doesn't make any difference where you are. You can be killed by a random act of violence anywhere just by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Because of the nature of google, how it deals with keywords, some hits make it appears she has died.

Which, of course, we hope and pray will not be the case.

&, yes, the organized killing by powerful cartels in Mexico is entirely different than this. There the danger is widespread, not random and it is fairly safe to say it could happen anywhere, any time. In this case it is not, but it could be the very normal looking person standing right next to you. Still, any place any time, but the odds being much less.
