  • Support petition for Tesla to be able to sell cars direct to consumers

States like Arizona, Texas, Massachusetts and North Carolina either have or have recently added legislation to prevent Tesla from selling its cars directly to consumers. Now there's a petition on whitehouse.gov to allow them to sell cars directly to consumers.

States should not be allowed to prevent Tesla Motors from selling cars directly to customers. The state legislators are trying to unfairly protect automobile dealers in their states from competition. Tesla is providing competition, which is good for consumers.

Petition: Allow Tesla Motors to sell directly to consumers in all 50 states

This belongs on the Political board.

I support states rights of being able to make these decisions, not big government in Washington, DC.

The Supreme Court took away states rights to adopt usury laws to govern interest rates. North Carolina had one that protected its citizens. Now the big banks can charge mafia level interest rates on credit cards to our citizens.

If I wanted to buy a Morgan (and a Morgan is a heck of a lot nicer car than a Tesla), I would need to go to one of the two Morgan dealers in the US, one in suburban DC and one in California. There is no reason in the world that someone who wants to buy a Tesla could not do the same thing.

Tesla is in a different price category, it is also fully electric vehicle. It looks more like what cars of the future should be. So comparison with and an exclusive, luxurious Morgan isn't totally fair.

Interstate commerce laws can be used by government to regulate this. Government uses it very often for various issues. Why I can buy the TV out of state and have it delivered, and can't buy a car out of state and have it delivered?

There are good and bad regulations. Limiting direct sales is a bad one IMO, since its purpose is to force dealerships upon buyers without adding any value to consumers.

FWIW, Tesla got the highest rating from Consumer Reports than any car in history. It is an awesome automobile. I have no problem with selling directly to the consumers.

The Tesla, like any electric car is not suitable for us as most of our driving exceeds their range of 240 miles. I love my 15 mpg Honda Ridgeline.

        BTW, I signed the petition.

Actually, with their currently largest battery 85kWh it can go 301 miles: How far can Tesla go
Plus, Tesla has many free recharging stations within this range. So when you drive further, the only downside will be to make your route to go through those and stop for 30-60 minutes there.
The reason I didn't buy one is the $72K price tag. But this most likely will be falling.

            .
Maybe Wyndham can start putting Tesla charging stations at their resorts and sell a Tesla points package.

Is it being subsidized by government like the boondoggle Chevy Volt or that other electric car whose maker just went belly-up?

I'll take a Morgan any day, classic British sports car styling with a body style that hasn't been significantly altered since 1939. Too bad that the Rover V8 is no longer available as an engine option.

Tesla received a loan from the federal government that they have since paid back ahead of schedule. To compare the Tesla with the Chevy Volt or any other electric car indicates thay you don't know anything about Tesla, neither the cars nor the company.

"Tesla Motors, Inc. is a Silicon Valley-based company that designs, manufactures and sells electric cars and electric vehicle powertrain components. Tesla Motors is a public company that trades on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the symbol TSLA. After 10 years, Tesla posted profits for the first time during the first quarter of 2013."

They are made in Fremont California at the old GM/Toyota assembly plant. The company was founded in Silicon Valley and is headquartered there. Their battery technology is based on laptop computer battery technology.

                      "Main article: Tesla Factory

Using US$365 million in federal low-interest loans, Tesla had planned to build a Model S assembly plant in California with a fully ramped-up annual output of 20,000 sedans.[121] Tesla did not announce a specific location, though unconfirmed media reports had focused on Southern California.[122] In mid-2009, many speculative media reports suggested that Tesla could occupy the NUMMI assembly plant in Fremont, CA, which General Motors and Toyota had signaled they planned to vacate. Tesla stated it would develop a brownfield site on existing industrial property—a preference of the federal government in approving candidates for interest-bearing loans from the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Program.

On 20 May 2010, Tesla announced that it would partner with Toyota to produce the Model S at the former NUMMI plant.[20] The facility opened on October 27, 2010 as the Tesla Factory."

How to sell their vehicles should be up to Tesla and not the government.

Its a very pretty car. Very sporty. Not like some of the other ugly hybrids. This is a nice luxury car. The one i saw was white.

There is a development in this case: Tesla Banned From Selling Cars In New Jersey
Their governor Chris Christie just signed the bill into the law.

I can't believe how corrupt the government is there. Politician's hands are greased by the dealers and oil industries. Nobody in their right mind would believe it is better for consumers if they have to go to the dealerships to buy cars.
