  • Milk Man kills Girls at Pa. Amish School

What the heck is going on? Another school shooting took place today, and more young girls were killed. This is really sick. What's happening to the world?......................

Milk man kills girls at Pa. Amish school

NICKEL MINES, Pa. - A 32-year-old milk truck driver took about a dozen girls hostage in a one-room Amish schoolhouse Monday, barricaded the doors with boards and killed at least three girls and apparently himself, authorities said.

It was the nation's third deadly school shooting in less than a week, and similar to an attack just days earlier at a school in Colorado.

The gunman, identified as Charles Carl Roberts IV, was inside for over half an hour and had barred the doors with 2x4s with the girls inside, State Police Commissioner Jeffrey B. Miller said. By the time officers broke windows to get in, three girls and the gunman were dead, Miller said.

Lancaster County Coroner G. Gary Kirchner initially said six people were killed, but later said he wasn't certain. At least seven people were taken to hospitals, including at least three girls in critical condition with gunshot wounds.

Roberts walked into the one-room West Nickel Mines Amish School with a shotgun and handgun, then released about 15 boys, a pregnant woman and three women with infants before barring the doors, Miller said.

The girls were lined up along a blackboard and their feet were bound, he said.

A teacher called police around 10:30 a.m. and reported that a gunman was holding students hostage.

About 11 a.m., Roberts apparently called his wife from a cell phone, saying he was "acting out in revenge for something that happened 20 years ago," Miller said. "It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims."

Moments later, Roberts told a dispatcher he would open fire on the children if police didn't back away from the building. Troopers heard gunfire in the building seconds later.

The school has about 25 to 30 students in all, ages 6 to 13.

"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said. He released no further details about that what the grudge Roberts mentioned could have involved.

The school is among farmlands just outside Nickel Mines, a tiny village about 55 miles west of Philadelphia. Hours after the shootings, about three dozen people in traditional Amish clothing, hats and bonnets stood near the small building, surrounded by a white board fence, as investigators walked in line through fields searching for evidence.

In a society with such free access to firearms it's inevitable that the fruit loops will also get hold of them.
Even in the UK where firearms are pretty much banned there is an upsurge in gang related shootings.

It is impossible to keep the nut cases from doing harm... if you take their guns they will do it with knives, bombs, poison, or ??? At least in a free society citizens that are armed have a chance to fight back instead of hoping that the police respond in time.

FWIW, I don't leave home without a little buddy on me

I heard on the news that because of the secluded life of the Amish, they may never have heard about Columbine. Therefore, there would not have been any crisis plan in place...how very, very sad.

            jacki,

I heard that too. Also, those kids don't really watch TV, and they are not accustomed to seeing guns or violence. They must have been petrified. (Not that any child wouldn't be petrified!) They were so young, it's such a shame.........

How many things do parents need to worry about these days? The list just seems to keep growing.

Ro think when we were in school, the worst thing you could do was get pregnant, smoke cigarettes, or throw spit balls. I feel so sorry for this group as they live in another world. shaggy

Just because they are Amish doesn't mean they don't use guns or have people among them who are violent. The murderer lived right next door to the school but was not Amish. Since we are in PA, we were watching CNN most of the day. Geez, if the guy wanted to kill himself, why did he kill/hurt those little girls who weren't even born 20 years ago? Imagine the trauma to his own kids having to live with this the rest of their lives. Such a sad and tragic situation for all concerned.

Yes, it's certainly heart breaking. I had to stop and cry as I heard it on the radio while going to pick my daughter up from Kindy. Those poor children and their families. So sad.

There is too much violence shown on TV or in the movies too and what about all the games and software programs that are being sold today? Maybe the man was taking some dangerous drugs that altered his personality completely or gave him a chemical imbalance? Do you hear the side effects they have to mention in their TV ads when they advertise some of the drugs? You have to be out of your mind to ask your doctor if you can try any of these drugs that have so many side effects. JMHO.

Yes, we live in a dangerous world today and I feel very sad for the children who are the victims of all this insanity.

I feel very sorry for the children and the families. How do these people get away with what they do, someone must have known he was a nutter waiting to go off.

Here in the UK we have a situation where a young polish student has been murdered in a church where she was working, to pay for her studies.
The prime suspect is a child rapist who was a volunteer worker at the church.

Why are convicted child rapists, or rapists of anykind for that matter, allowed to walk the streets in the UK. They should be tried convicted and then shot. I feel very angry that this young girl has been killed by someone that has commited, and been convicted of serious crimes. He should not be living IMO, but he is free to walk among decent people, and brutally murder an innocent young girl.

The prime suspect was working under a false name. I suspect that as a volunteer, in a role which didn't involve children, there would have been few checks made on his background. I believe he was working as an odd job man.

A bit extreme, but I do understand the frustration at the British legal system. I does seem to favour the criminal over the victim. The problem with your suggested solution is where somebody is wrongly convicted - it does happen. There have been numerous high profile cases of women screaming 'rape' when the facts, when they finally come out, tell a very different story.
I strongly support the argument that life imprisonment should mean precisely that, as I believe it does in the USA. Our friends in the US may be surprised to learn that in the UK, somebody sentanced to 'life imprisonment' can be out again in well under 10 years. They are 'on licence' which means if they offend again, in any way, they can be locked back up again, but they are still back out with the opportunity to reoffend.

This is all over our local news (I could get to this small town in 30 to 45-minutes from home and I drove through that town on the way to work for several years)...

It seems that the guy lost a child a year-and-a-half ago and that was mentioned in the letters he left his wife and kids as well as something that happened 20-years ago when this guy was 12.

Th enews is reporting that the guy had become different a few months ago but seemed to snap out of it a week to week-and-a-half ago when police believe he decided to do something like this.

I agree with the advise above however... too bad the guy didn't just do himself in as those children sure never did anything to him...

This latest tragedy had me actually weeping for the violence manifesting itself, almost as a karmic wave. This is the wrong forum for me to get political, but let me just quote an old saying: A country that lives by the sword will die by the sword.
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed and those who are cold and are not clothed."

Hi Keith, in my "all rapists should be shot world" I would have to try each case on the facts, as there is a difference between a rape on a child or on an innocent woman walking home for instance, and two people getting drunk and having sex, and then one thinking better of it in the morning. But I know where you are coming from. A bit extreme to shoot all rapists I agree, (90% maybe), but its so bloody frustrating that these people keep getting let out time and again to re offend.
