MOSCOW, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Russian wine and spirits producers say the government should create a "people's vodka" to replace deadly substitutes.
Osman Paragulgov, head of the wine and spirits union, says a cheap, safe, regulated alcohol could save the lives of poor Russians who can't afford the real vodka that is currently on store shelves, the BBC said.
Last year, more than 40,000 people died after drinking fake alcohol. Several regions have recently declared states of emergency.
Russian officials say more than 8 million tons of potentially dangerous substances have been seized in recent months in an effort to halt the production and sale of counterfeit alcohol, the BBC reported.
