Mint Error
March 2007
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - An unknown number of new George Washington
dollar coins were mistakenly struck without their edge inscriptions,
including "In God We Trust," and made it past inspectors and into
circulation, the U.S. Mint said Wednesday.
These 2007 George Washington coins all have the smooth edge error.
We checked our coins and we discovered ours had the edge inscription
however, some edge inscriptions were upside down. Strange!

Didn't we try this back in the '70s with the Susan B. Anthony dollar ?
I remember that as a monumental failure. Wish we could be like Ireland and the U.K. who adapted nicely with the phasing out of the 1 punt/pound and the acceptance of the smaller denomination coinage.

For this to be successful the American population has to be willing to give up the buck. In Canada they decided to do away with the dollar bill and go with the coin only (loonie). I am sure they saved millions in printing costs. They decided to get rid of their two dollar bill also and replace it with the twoonie. We could save millions in printing costs and the people would just get used to it. Your change jar ends up with lots of money in it even though it doesn't look full.Grande Vista owners group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GVnewsgroup/

Eliminating the paper dollar could be devastating to the stripper-pole dancer profession. They would have to make panties with pockets.
The size on the dollar coin have been a problem, looking a lot like a quarter. It should be bigger and perhaps square with rounded edges if it is to be successful.

Whatever happened to the 50 cent piece? No Frank and Trog: Not that kind of a piece. How bad is that, I can't even find a cent symbol on my keyboard? Did the old Royal typewritters, or Underwoods, or whatever brand have a cent symbol on the keyboard?Sandcrab

The coins without markings are selling for $100 to $400 on EBAY for ONE $1 coin! I tried to go to the bank to buy a $25 roll of coins and the bank said they were only allowed to sell $10 per customer. She then pulled them out of the Roll and counted out ten AND looked at the edges of the coins to make sure they were all marked.
I am not sure if the teller was collecting for herself or if the Mint is trying to get these removed from circulation. Either way, if you were lucky enough to buy a Roll that had even one of these unmarked coins that would be a huge retuen on your investment. I saw one report of an individual that got a roll where HALF the coins were unmarked!!!
So, if that was 12-coins that sell for say $200/each that is $2400 for a $25 investment! Simply WOW...
I really like the idea of a Dollar coin, especually when vending machines will take them!

It is not just the cash registers (or the stripper's outfit as mentioned by Tony) that will need to change.
Every junk food machine will have to change.
Coin changers (dollar bill to quarters)-gotta feed the laundry machines.
At the airport when you use the 'smart cart', you need to change that system. (Once upon a time I was in a smart cart commercial for use at the airport in MSP).
I am sure there are more examples of dollar bill vs dollar coin examples, but I can't think of any right nowDon

These coins don't look anything like a quarter. I'm sure the vending machine companies would be happier if we replaced the paper dollars with a coin because those paper dollar feeders are still pretty finicky.
