  • Indiana Mom Attempts to Outrun Freight Train, Kills 2 Children

I don't know if everyone say this on the news last night but this just makes me sick...

Police: Indiana Mom Attempts to Outrun Freight Train, Kills 2 Children
    Thursday, September 06, 2007

An Indiana mom attempted to outrun a freight train at an intersection but didn't see a train approaching from the other direction and crashed, killing two of her children, police said.

Authorities released a video showing Edie Bolanos attempting to outrun an eastbound train in her minivan by cutting through a parking lot and making a quick turn.

"It seemed that she [Edie Bolanos] was so intent on beating the eastbound train, she never even saw the westbound train that hit her," Hammond Police Sgt. Michael Jorden said.

Two of Bolanos' children, Crystal, 11, and Anahi, 8, were ejected from the van and pronounced dead at the scene. The other two children in the van were in stable condition.

"My heart goes out to the family," said Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller. "My only hope with the release of this [video] is that other people will learn a lesson, and maybe we can avoid another tragedy in the future."

The 65-second video from the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District shows Edie Bolanos turning her minivan into a parking lot, racing east and making a quick turn to get across the tracks.

The van does not appear to slow down as it approaches the tracks, according to the video. The westbound train struck the driver's side, pushing it into the eastbound train at 9:49 a.m. Saturday.
This woman should be locked up and her surving kids be put in protective custody...

Reminds me of a couple of other tragic stories about Hoosiers and trains:

In the 70s or 80s, an Indianapolis fire truck on an emergency run came up behind a line of cars and passed them, thinking the cars were stopped by their lights and sirens. Unfortunately they were stopped for a train....

And in the 60s, four teenagers were on their way to work detasseling corn (for hybrid seed corn) early in the morning, and their car was hit by a train. All four were killed, so no one knows whether they saw the train and tried to outrun it or not. My Dad took me to see the remains of the car so that I would never try to outrun a train...

I saw the tape on the news early this morning. It appears to me she was deliberately trying to outrun a train. That is stupid enough. Never mind that there was a second train involved. People like that should be gleaned from the gene pool.

One has to wonder if it wasn't suicide or some type of psychotic break ?

What was that great quote by Margaret Mead the noted anthropologist ?
It went something like this (and I am paraphrasing), "Licenses should not be required to get married; they should be required to have children"........
          something to this effect.
Michael Levine also said something like "having children makes you no more of a parent than having a piano in the house makes you a pianist".

I saw it and was horrified. Then I saw the tape of the Mother who left her two year old in the car (with tragic results). It happens ever year.... Are we over scheduling our lives ?

I can't believe she tried to outrun the train giving the train's head start and she will need to make some kind of U turn to cross the rail road. She was focused of trying to get pass the first train she didn't see the 2nd one. Clearly the 2nd one was right there in her path, not sure tho if she got hit also by the original train that shes trying to beat but it looks like it.

I was told, as a budding driver, that trains are like deer....many times it's not the one you see that hits you. Stories like this one "prove" it.

We all do really, really stupid things...most of us are so lucky to have escaped the dire consequences of those stupid things. This woman did not.
