  • Wal-Mart goes stealth (from Wal-Mart Watch)

Heads up... Wal-Mart could be coming to your neighborhood, but you wouldn't know it just by looking at the new stores.

That's because Wal-Mart has gone stealth with a new chain of smaller convenience stores called Marketside. With new colors and designs -- and no mention of the word "Wal-Mart" whatsoever -- these stores are the retail giant's attempt to further saturate communities and creep into urban areas across the country, but without letting people know who's reaping the profits.

I don't understand your post. Why does it matter if Walmart is using a different store name?

Are you against all things Walmart?

When wal-mart under whatever name knocks out all other stores then a bottle of windex will be $ 10 and you will have no where else to go. wm sucks! Go ahead and treat the employees like crap, there are many more to hire and treat like crap also.

Wow, you really don't like Walmart. Did it put you out of business or something?

When that happens, the next discount chain will knock Wally-world off it's mountain much like what happened to K-mart years ago.

Keep in mind the the employee's of Wal-mart haven't had a gun put to their head and been forced to work their. They work for Wal-mart by CHOICE....their choice. My son worked for Wal-mart of a time as did my ex-wife. Neither work for Wal-mart now nor would they ever work for Wal-mart again. They made a choice and that choice was to better themselves and get into a position where Wal-mart didn't even have to be a consideration for employment.

I do not feel sorry for those that choose to work at Wal-mart. It's their choice to work there. They have other choices they can make in life if it's not what they want to do. They'll need to make some of those choices even if they create a little hardship for awhile. I know I struggled to re-educate myself and make a career change but me and my family are so much better off now than if I had choosen to take the path of least resistance.

I will shop at Wal-mart when it's convenient. Personally, I hate shopping there as I find the stores unappealing and I hate the crowds. But, I can afford to not shop at Wal-mart. There are those that really need the cost saving Wal-mart offers in order to provide for their families. I find it's often those that don't need Wal-mart that are the most vocal about trying to shut them down. Of course it doesn't matter to them if a pair of jeans cost $40 or $10 but, to some people that's the difference between their children eating lunch at school or going hungry. IMO, LONG LIVE WAL-MART!

I'm not a Wal-Mart shopper but my daughter just got hired & starting off making $10 an hour, not bad since she has never made that much at any job she had ever in her adult life. Times are real bad every where & she needed a job & they were the only ones to offer a job starting off as a part timer. The Wal-Mart here Naples is huge & really not that many people in it all tho I think it depends on what time you go to shop & they have 3 stores here.

I can sure understand why people go to Walmart. I went to the Neighborhood Market (grocery supermarket) this afternoon. The parking lot was as crowded as any other supermarket I've shopped in lately. I tend to shop there infrequently, perhaps every two months, for very specific things.

We've been looking to buy lemons to make some lemoncello. They've been $1.29 each in our local Albertson's and Vons (Safeway). They were 50 cents each today at Walmart. I buy soft butter there, it is $1.69 a container, and $3.29 +/- at the other stores. Kosher hot dogs (Hebrew National) and Hillshire Farms Sausage are both more than $1.50 cheaper a package. Smoked pork chops are $2. cheaper. Milk is 30 cents cheaper, so I got it cause I was there. Condiments are all cheaper there, as are paper products. Yoplait Yogurt is currently 75 cents at Vons and 55 cents at Walmart. These aren't sale prices, these are the regular prices at Walmart.

Walmart had six or eight self check out stations. But they also had four checkers checking people out, more than my regular stores usually do these days.

I'm on a fixed income. If I can save a dollar or more per item, the store is well stocked, and have no customer service complaints, why wouldn't I shop there?

Will do. He's planning to start making a couple of bottles tomorrow.

                    Hi to Lyman.

                      Hi Fern:

I've been on a fixed income since Jan, but DW still keeps me in the chips I satisfy my chocolate fix (Reeses miniatures and M & M peanuts) at Wal-Mart, they compete with the local Costco for the cheapest prices.

                      What exactly is lemoncello?

                      Lynn and Lyman:

Nice to see your post. When are we going to get together for the next cruise?

I do hope we'll be able to make the next cruise. Couldn't do the last one as we're going to the Panama Canal Nov 6 out of Fort Lauderdale for 10 days. This is the one we've always wanted to do.

Here's a recipe for limoncello. You only use the zest of the lemons (the skin without the white pith), so you have to make a lemon meringue npie with the juice. Or else juice the lemons and freeze them as lemon ice cubes for later use.

I was in Evansville, IN in May and saw one of these (Marketside). Maybe this was one of their test locations.
