  • Homemade Yogurt, more fun and yummy

Last year, as our favorite yogurt began to rise in price, I searched around for the best way to make our own yogurt.

First, I bought the Eurocuisine yogurt maker. I got it at Target: Eurocuisine

For the yogurt starter, I use Nancy's Yogurt, because it has a wider range of probiotics. One 32 oz size can last for several rounds of making home made yogurt. You can buy a package starter, but I prefer this way.

I use organic milk (usually 2%, but any variety works)...whatever brand is on sale, often it is Safeway's organic.

Heat the milk to range of 180F, be sure not to scorch. I use a stainless steel stove top measure: this one

Let the milk cool to about 110F, then add about 1/4 to 1/3 c of Nancy yogurt to the milk, stirring to incorporate.

Pour into the jars in the Eurocuisine yogurt maker, and set for at minimum, 9 hours. When light goes off, yogurt is done, cover the jars and enjoy a really tasty yogurt.
Life is short, live it with this awareness.

My recommendation is not to use this Nancy's Yogurt. She doesn't cook much.

I haven't made yogurt in a very long time but when I did I nerver used a yogurt maker. For a starter all you need is half a cup of yogurt (I think) you can pick up a 6 oz cup of yugurt at the grocer. I grew up on yogurt, my mom use to make it all the time.

Hop, you are right, you don't "need" a yogurt maker....I know many make it in a thermos or just in a bowl covered and warm....but this device never fails me, and it times it so that I don't forget about it.

I forgot to mention, I also use the last of one of the homemade yogurts to start the next batch.

Nancy, you are safe! I would never think of it!

That's what my mom use to do, save a cup of yogurt to make more.

When I was kid we use to eat french fries and dip it in the yogurt. Well DH thought I was crazy when he saw me do that. So now guess who is doing that. Just the other day he said let's have some fries and yogurt. I said I don't have any yogurt, he said I'll go get some lol. I don't make fries very often and when I do I baked them.

I make yogurt, too! Well, I have made it. I always start with a tablespoon of plain yogurt, usually Dannon. I've never used any of those commercial starters.
