  • Good Luck Foods For The New Year.....

The new year is upon us! Can you believe it will be 2012? Where did the time go? New Year's Eve is a time for partying and revelry, forgetting the old year that has passed. But New Year's Day brings the promise of a better year, a more prosperous one. Many cultures believe that eating specific foods on the first day of the new year brings luck, wealth and prosperity. It's a tradition that's worth upholding even if you're not a believer in luck.

From Europe to South America, people have been eating lucky foods for centuries. Browse our guide for the dishes you should be eating this New Year's Day. You'll find that eating fish and pork brings lots of luck, but chicken and lobster is to be avoided at all costs. And you might think it's strange to stuff your face with twelve grapes on New Year's Eve, but it might just work and bring you luck. What's the harm in at least trying?

I am making a traditional good luck southern supper as we speak. I havce a pork roast in the crock pot, soaking my black eyed peas, seasoning with ham, collard greens also seasoned with ham , and rice. For the firsst time I'm trying to make hog jowls.

The black eyed peas stand for money/coins, the collards are green money & the ham is for luck. Oh yeah, gotta make my cornbread.

May I wish all of you health, wealth, luck and just good things for the new year!!!

My mother's husband eats a herring every New Year's Eve. He says it is for luck and he has been doing it since he was a child. I have to admit, he is a lucky person.

Defrosted the ham and bone from Christmas Eve and it's in the crockpot making lentil soup. Now I will have to stay up until 11pm tonight to have some for luck.

Well, just finished my New Year's dinner. It was so good , esp the collards & the pork roast. I didn't do the hog jowls after all. The corn muffins were good. James thought the collards were the best he ever had and I sent him home with lots of left overs. shaggy

but chicken and lobster is to be avoided at all costs.
I didn't have the nerve to confess yesterday, since I posted the "good luck foods," but I wound up eating lobster yesterday.

I went to an all you can eat brunch at a steak house where there was a huge platter of lobsters, and I couldn't stop myself......Although, I only had one. DH had two.

I tried to make up for it by eating more greens than I normally would, but they only had creamed spinach, so I'm not sure if that even counts.

BTW, there was a huge dessert section, but no donuts, or grapes.

The only pork that I could find was bacon, so even tho I didn't have an omelet, I took one piece of bacon, for good luck.

                Hope I'm not doomed!
