  • Congratulations to the Boston Bruins

Congratulations to the Boston Bruins for winning the Stanley Cup last night in Vancouver.

Unfortunately the evening was marred by hooligans in Vancouver that rioted, burned cars, looted stores, etc.

As a Canadian myself, I can only say that dissappointment and shame are the only things that can be said for what happened last night. Referring more to actions which occured afterwards.

Congratulations to the Bruins, despite the fact they are not my home team. Even better for them to have defeated the odds of the home team having advantage.

So happy for the Bruins' win. They clearly played the better series.

But it was so sad to see what happened in Vancouver. I was shocked as it seemed like such a "civilized" city when I was there a few years back.

Well, of course I've been following the Canucks. Disappointed they didn't win but clearly the Bruins, and in particular Tim Thomas were the better team. It was a hard fought series between two teams who worked hard to get there and had a few close calls along the way.

The riot thing was a surprise to me, although more and more information is coming out that there were tweets and facebook pages set up to "organize" it in advance.

Vancouver is a civilized city - of course it's always a few that ruin it for everybody. I suppose the true character of the city is coming out today and many citizens are volunteering their time to help clean up downtown. There have been facebook pages set up to post pictures of the hooligans in hopes they can be identified and the mayor and the police are asking the public to submit video or photographs to them.

There was a similar riot in '94. But in the past several years, we have had an annual fireworks competition - usually over 100K people in the downtown core with no real problems. And of course the Olympics went off without a hitch. Unfortunately, if the Canucks do well into the playoffs next year, I doubt the powers that be will be willing to chance another fan zone like they did this year - so again a few have ruined it for many. Vancouver again will be considered a "no fun" zone with the clampdowns that are sure to happen.

Unfortunately, the great season the Canucks had and the hard fought playoff battles, particularly against Chicago and Boston, have been completely forgotten because of the ugly aftermath.

The most recent news about the riot shows it was a lot more serious than was first reported. There were millions of dollars in damage and several people were injured.

This sort of thing happens in other places as well. I don't blame the fans for it though I was certainly disappointed at their booing when the Bruins won the game. I am an avid sports fan of Hockey, Baseball, Football, and Basketball. I have never understood how so many people take it so seriously. Do they honestly believe that winning somehow makes their city, or country better than the loser's. In the end it is just a game played by very skillful professionals for our entertainment.

Are you talking about when the Cup was actually presented and the crowd was booing? That was booing Gary Bettman, who the conspiracy theorists think is personally out to sabotage the Canucks.

Actually at least one of the Bruins, when interviewed on the CBC coverage after the game, said he appreciated the ovation and respect shown by the Vancouver crowd to the Bruins after the game. Unless I missed something, I thought the crowd was pretty positive.
