I heard this morning that he was not wearing a helmet......I wonder what his contract said about motorcycles.

Don't know re: the contract, but I like what Bradshaw (he always cracks me up) had to say:

In May 2005, Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. tore knee ligaments in a motorcycle accident and was lost for the season.

Roethlisberger continued to ride after Winslow's accident and that angered Terry Bradshaw, who quarterbacked the Steelers to four Super Bowl victories during the 1970s.

Visiting the Steelers' training camp last summer, Bradshaw remarked: "Ride it when you retire."

Did you see the damage to the windshield from his face.....dang....and it was not specifically in his contract but they are arguing over it now since he was not wearing a helmet....so maybe a violation.

What a great role model for kids....refused to wear a helmet....nice....this is why they have helmet laws in some states....because so many people are stupid.

Helmuts certainly don't prevent people from doing stupid things. If they did, they would pass a law to require wearing one in a timesharing sales presentation.

His contract does not prohibit him from riding a motorcycle (with or without a helmet). There is no helmet law in PA.

            http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05127/500755.stm

When he gave so many interviews saying he was not going to wear a helmet it seemed inevitable that he would have accident under Murphy's Law.

My usually retort to those who flaunt "their right" not to wear a helmet is:

"If you have insurance, it ups my (and others) premiums. Once you tap out all of your insurance with your catastrophic medical claim, you go on state or federal medicaid. This comes out of the same pockets, again. So before you go telling me it's not my business, it is".

Having worked at the real "St. Elsewhere's" (Boston City Hospital) real life Level I trauma, all I can say is motorized or not, please, please, please wear your helmet.

I agree with beags....we pay no matter....they should just sign a waiver that if riders don't wear a helmet and they splat then just let em lie there and die under the law of stupidity.

Was listening to sports talk radio and the contract violation they were talking about was 'reckless endagerment' or something like that since they kept asking him to wear a helmet and he refused.

I sure wish there was a way to simulate that blank look in an oncoming driver's face when they are looking through you, not at you. That should be the test to get you m/c license.

Riding a donercycle made me a much better auto driver.

I know this is but I wanted to add this in. If you get into a car accident and get hurt. your law suit will be cut in half if you are not wearing your seat belt. They feel you are liable for not wearing it. Maybe the same should go if you do not wear a helmet.

Hey can we get some pictures posted of what his face looks like now. Are there any out there?

This is why we (nurses) refer to bike riders without helmets as "organ donors".

Those who don't wear protective helmets don't have a helluva lot to protect, apparently.

Roethlisberger Told He Was Close to Dying
                      Updated 8:16 AM ET July 13, 2006

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said Wednesday night that he was told he was "seconds, maybe a minute away from dying" immediately after his motorcycle accident last month.

Roethlisberger, in his first interview since the June 12 accident, told ESPN's "SportsCenter" that he doesn't remember much about the accident when he rammed his motorcycle into a car that was making a left turn in front of him on a Pittsburgh street. He did, however, remember what he was told by people at the scene.

"They told me that I was literally seconds, maybe a minute away from dying because I slit a vein or artery in my mouth or my throat and it was draining blood right into my stomach and luckily the paramedic noticed it and stopped it or else I would have had too much blood in my stomach," he said in Los Angeles where he was for the taping of the ESPY Awards.

"I remember very few things about the accident," Roethlisberger said. "I remember one car turning in front of me, I don't remember the car that hit me, but I remember that first car turning in front of me and the next thing I remember is being in the ambulance and asking, 'Is this really happening?'

"I said, 'Tell me this is just a bad dream,' and he said, 'No, everything is going to be OK,' and he asked me, 'Is there anyone you want me to call?' ... I just gave him two numbers and I don't remember anything until I woke up from surgery."

Roethlisberger underwent seven hours of surgery to repair a broken jaw and other facial bones. Tests showed no brain injuries, although he had a mild concussion. He also lost two teeth and chipped several others.

Roethlisberger was cited for not wearing a helmet when the accident happened.

"That day I wasn't, I forgot it. I literally forgot it," he said. "You know there are times that, people that have been making a big deal for the last couple years about me riding first of all, and then me riding without a helmet, but it's one of those things that I ride with a helmet also. I do a little bit of both. If you don't wear a seat belt every time you ride in the car should I label you as a person who doesn't wear a seat belt? And unfortunately I happened to not have it on that day because I forgot it in the basement."

Roethlisberger said he didn't know if he would ride a motorcycle again.

"I don't know. I am not even thinking about that right now," he said. "To me, right now, like I said when I first started thinking about things, I started thinking about my family. Now that I am doing better and I feel good, now all I am thinking about is football and that is what is on my mind right now. I am getting healthy and I am getting better every day so all I am thinking about is football. I am not thinking about anything else."

Roethlisberger is scheduled to play in a celebrity golf tournament this weekend in Lake Tahoe, Nev.

Including the postseason, the Steelers are 27-4 with Roethlisberger at quarterback. They advanced to the AFC championship game in both his seasons as a starter, winning the Super Bowl in January.

The Steelers won the ESPY for best team and Roethlisberger joined his teammates and coach Bill Cowher onstage to accept the award. It was his first public appearance since the accident.

Roethlisberger didn't appear backstage to talk to reporters.

"I have no concerns about Ben," Cowher said backstage. "He's going to have to get hit a couple times to see if he's all the way back. Hopefully, he can be a great inspiration to a lot of people about looking at life a little more cautiously."

Ben Roethlisberger Won't Become Helmet Advocate

EXCLUSIVE: Ben Roethlisberger Won't Become Helmet Advocate (I want to be an organ donor !- this added by Beags)

                            Updated 12:56 PM ET July 14, 2006

A month ago, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger scared his team -- also family, friends and fans -- when he was seriously hurt in a motorcycle accident.

In an exclusive interview with "Good Morning America," the quarterback told Robin Roberts why he had forgotten his helmet that fateful day and why he wouldn't become an advocate for helmet safety.

Roethlisberger suffered a 9-inch laceration to the head, multiple facial fractures, and serious knee damage June 12 when a car ran into him in downtown Pittsburgh.

He expects to make a full recovery and be ready for training camp, which begins July 28 at St. Vincent College, near Latrobe, Pa.

"I'm doing well," Roethlisberger said. "I'm feeling a little bit better every day, and I'm still amazing the doctors every time I go to see them 'cause they are just amazed at how fast I'm progressing."

The reason why the youngest quarterback ever to lead his team to a Super Bowl victory wasn't wearing his helmet that day -- a fact that baffles many -- was simply that he forgot.

"You know, it's one of those things that sometimes I did wear a helmet and sometimes I didn't," Roethlisberger said.

"Actually, that morning I was on my way to work out, and I had just gotten my bike all custom done. It was painted up, and it was really nice. And I was supposed to take my helmet that day with me to take it to get it painted to match the bike so I could wear it all the time when I rode that bike. And I totally forgot it that day," he said.

Don't look for Roethlisberger, however, to do any public service announcements about the importance of wearing a helmet.

"I don't think that that's my place," he said. "You know, I think that some people feel that, you know, I probably should be doing that and being a big advocate for that. But for me, you know, I'm going to let people make their own decision 'cause I think that's what it's about."

                            No Plans to Ride Again
Right now, Roethlisberger said, he doesn't even want to think about riding a motorcycle again. "Well, you know what, once this season's over, maybe I'll start thinking about if I'm going to ride again," he said. "But ... the season's too close. Training camp is less than three weeks away, and I don't want to [focus] on anything but getting better and getting ready for training camp. Because that's what I do is football, and that's what's most important on my mind."

Roethlisberger is lucky to be alive, let alone returning to football so soon.

A quick-thinking paramedic noticed that a slit vein or artery was draining blood right into Roethlisberger's stomach and stopped it seconds before it would have killed him, he told ESPN Thursday.

The quarterback said on "Good Morning America" that he had felt a "little invincible" the day before the accident.

"You know, I'm coming off of two pretty good seasons in the NFL, winning a Super Bowl and, you know, 24 years old and maybe I felt a little invincible," he said. "And this was God's way of saying, 'Hey, I can take it away from you at any time, so you better back off a little bit.'"

When he realized he had been in an accident, Roethlisberger said, he hoped it wasn't really happening.

"And I just remember, you know, basically, you know, crying and saying to [the paramedic], 'Please tell me this is not happening and this is just a nightmare,'" he said. "And he's telling me, 'No. You're going to be OK though.' And I just kept telling him, 'Please tell me it's not true.'"

Roethlisberger said he was sorry for worrying his friends, his family and his fans.

"I do feel bad for letting my fans down," he said. "Steeler fans are the best fans in all of sports, and I feel bad for worrying them about me. But I want them all to know that I'll be OK."
