  • Roger Goodell: Hail Mary TD call didn't speed up referee deal

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap100...module=News_CP

Two days after a missed call on the final play cost the Green Bay Packers a victory over the Seattle Seahawks, the NFL and the officials' union announced a tentative eight-year agreement to end a lockout that began in June.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell temporarily lifted the lockout so the regular officials can work Thursday night's game between the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens, airing on NFL Network.

Goodell insisted during a Thursday conference call that the timing of the deal was not a reaction to the outcry over "Monday Night Football." The two sides had been in "intensive negotiations" the last two weeks, he said, though he acknowledged that game "may have pushed the parties further along."

The commissioner was watching at home Monday night.

"You never want to see a game end like that," Goodell said.

But he wouldn't concede that the presence of replacement officials increased the chances an egregious mistake would occur. Goodell repeatedly reminded reporters that the regular officials have botched plenty of calls over the years.

The new agreement, he said, will improve officiating week in and week out, reducing similar mistakes in the future and making the strains of the last three weeks worthwhile.

In the meantime, he asserted, players' health and safety were never jeopardized by the use of replacement officials.

"The folks on the field during the last three weeks were under unprecedented scrutiny," Goodell said. "Everything they did, every call, was magnified. They kept the game going. They worked hard. They trained hard. They were incredibly focused and dedicated."

The new deal is the longest between the NFL and game officials in NFL history. Officials will vote on the agreement Friday and Saturday in Dallas, and a clinic for them will be held after the vote.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

    Sure, right.

The 9/11 attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi was not a planned terrorist activity but occurred spontaneously during a street protest.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

      “You shouldn't wear that body.”

        National Football League

        To NFL Fans:

The National Football League is at its best when the focus is on the players and the action on the field, not on labor negotiations.

All of us who love the sport appreciate the skills and dedication of the players and coaches. That is why we are focused not just on what happens on the field but what our game will be like in another decade or two. The NFL has always tried to look ahead, to innovate, and to constantly improve in all we do.

We recognize that some decisions may be difficult to accept in the passion of the moment, but my most important responsibility is to improve the game for this generation and the next.

I believe in accountability, not excuses. And I regret we were not able to secure an agreement sooner in the process and avoid the unfortunate distractions to the game. You deserve better.

As a lifelong fan, this wasn't an easy process for anyone involved. I particularly want to commend the replacement officials for taking on an unenviable task and doing it with focus and dedication in the most adverse of circumstances.

Our new agreement gives long-term stability to an important aspect of our game, officiating. More important, with this agreement, officiating will be better in the long run. While the financial issues received the most attention, these negotiations were much more about long-term reforms. For example, beginning with the 2013 season, the NFL will have the option of hiring a number of officials on a full-time basis to work year-round, including on the field. In addition, the NFL will have the option to retain additional officials for training and development purposes, and may assign those additional officials to work NFL games.

We are moving forward with the finest officials in sports back on the field. It's time to put the focus where it belongs – on the clubs and players and our magnificent game, with a special thanks to our fans for their passion.

That's the biggest "spin" I have seen in a long time. Just last week the NFL was saying they had the replacement officials scheduled to work for at least the first 5 weeks. I don't think anyone is buying their line.

What a bunch of BS. I am sure that the NFL also made it clear that there is only home field calls at the end of the game.

After all we don't want to hurt the image of the NFL with a riot!
