When I was at Moo U, and was with the team, sometimes I had that sideline ball assignment. Each team had their own balls, sanctioned ones, but different according to the likes of each team. Of course, there were passing balls and running balls and kicking balls. To keep them straight, each team had their name stamped on them . . . University of Nebraska, Oklahoma University, Kansas University, etc.
A little game we played was to try to get at least one of the other team's balls in our bag before the end of the game, then get the heck ouuta there. Funny thing is, we normally lost one or two of ours, too.
I always had a varsity passing ball in my closet for our intramural teams to use. I'd set one by the chainlink fence in a remote corner of the practice field, and come back after training table and pick it up.
I still can see Johnny Majors yelling and blowing his damn whistle, scrambling down off his 2-story tower, running across the defense field, yelling at someone on the offense field, and then it being me.
So, see, the abuse started early.
