  • Ryder Cup..

Just back form todays session . The US have a big task on their hands for tomorrow. What surprised me was the number of "rookies" on the US team .One player never played in a foresome or a foreball before .Where are all the top players?
    Regards to all Garry

The US, and probably the Europeans, are forced to take the top 10 $$ leaders and then the Captain gets to pick two extras. If you have 4 or 5 rookies in the top 10 $$ list you're stuck with them. I'd like to see different rules. Maybe take the top 5 $$ winners and let the Capt. pick the next 7. I may be off a little on my numbers but they're close.

Totally agree Phil. The highest moneyearner is not necessarilly the best for the yder cup.

There is no way this was your best US team . Kentucky has to be much better.

We had Tiger, Mickelson, and Furyk there.

We just got beat, plain and simple.

But what a great tournament to watch. Much more exciting than stroke play.

And but for Paul McGinley (?sp) conceding a 25ft putt to half his match it would have been the biggest loss ever by the US team

              Rookies weren't the problem

I didn't see Sundays matches (had to work) but it wasn't the rookies on the team that were the problem.
Tiger & Furyk (1&3 in the world rankings respectively)won once out of four times. Phil (ranked 2nd) hadn't won a match.

Don't know if maybe it was the weather or too much of that Irish air ( I'm a Clancy on my father's mothers side) or fermented Irish water (whiskey)!

The europeans especially Sergio get really pumped up for this event. Maybe because they can't beat Tiger but he's only one of a 12 member team here so he can't do it all. As a matter of fact he couldn't do much. Low blow by the Irish media in regards to his spouse in my opinion.

But what a great year for him golf wise, although losing his dad must've been quite a jolt.

Overall Woods played at least as well as the rest of the team. He won 3 of the 5 games he was involved in. Even if he had won all 5 it wouldn't have changed the overall result.
It seemed that the old problems are still there with the US 'team' for the Ryder Cup - many of them just gave the impression that they didn't want to be there. Presumably not enough money for a weeks work! It was commented on numerous times that, even on the few occasions when they did win, the Americans never seemed to smile.

Just back from the K Club

                  Youch-a-wawa !

I was there for two days; one practice (have photos) and one match (could not bring camera in on match play days).

We couldn't buy a putt. The Euros simply outplayed us, fair and square.

Hey Garry, I looked for you ! Where were you ? I was at the 15th & 13th holes on Wednesday (rain) and on the 4th and 13th on Saturday (rain early).

Had a great time in Ireland. Will post my photos and review on Knocktopher Abbey this weekend.

                    C'mon,

Any more lame excuses? I think I'm right in saying that the weather was the same for both teams. A number of the European team players also spend much of the year in the USA and experience the same weather conditions as the Yanks. What's being suggested - suspend play when conditions aren't perfect for them? Can't the multi-millionaires afford waterproofs??
I agree losing his dad must have been a jolt, but no more so than Darren Clarke losing his wife at the age of 39. Clarke and the European team used that loss as an added incentive to go out and perform. Need I say more?

Oh, about the K Club. I can't imagine why there was so much Budweiser !
Yuck ! There was Guinness, too, but Budweiser ? Life is toooo short to drink crap beer.
I discovered Beamish Red Ale !

Re: the game. We were out-putted, out-driven, out-everythinged. We once dominated this (this is my third Ryder Cup visit) and even though I was hoping/praying for a repeat of '99 Brookline, it wasn't to be.

Not sure if golf, a singular game of sorts, can be played well by some of our (U.S.) players in a team effort. Not saying that they're Prima Donas, just not the mind-set ??? The Euros seem to have gotten the hang of it.

I'm planning to go to Kentucky in '08 and Wales in '10.

                        Beags,

I'm guessing that you mean an American win, not the whole American team and their wives / girlfriends charging onto the green before the match in progress was actually over

The Americans have the #1 and 2 players in the world. But the Europeans have the best Team Players. Maybe in 2008?

A wiinner never quits and la quitter never wins.

That was in bad form, indeed, however, would it have changed the outcome ?
Also, in bad form, has been some of re: the "WAGS/BAGS comments(wives and girlfriends/brides and girlfriends) by Monty (but I like him otherwise) and the nationalism of the US at Kiaweh.
                            Emotions run high.

                              A couple of points...

                              Budweiser....won the franchise I guess !
As mentioned the weather was the same for all.
I wonder will this event survive in this commercial world.
The big winner was Ireland I guess....every hotel and guest house booked out for weeks .
