  • Holy Cow Phil Rizzuto voice of the Yankees dies

ESPN - Rizzuto, Yankees' Hall of Famer, dies at 89 - MLB

"I guess heaven must have needed a shortstop," Yankees owner George Steinbrenner said in a statement. "He epitomized the Yankee spirit -- gritty and hard charging -- and he wore the pinstripes proudly."

Rizzuto was the oldest living Hall of Famer and his Cooperstown plaque noted how he "overcame diminutive size." At 5-foot-6, he played over his head, winning seven World Series titles and an AL MVP award and becoming a five-time All-Star.

I liked him, and will always remember him best for his part in Meatloaf's Paradise by the Dashboard Light. RIP

My parents live in the same place as Phil did. They played Bingo with him and have met some of his family. My Dad was a big Yankee and Phil Rizzuto fan especially since he and Phil were both Italian. He would have been so excited to meet and talk with him. Unfortunately, by the time my parents moved there my Dad's mind was too far gone for him to remember who Phil was.

I liked Phil as a player but couldn't take his broadcasts.
