That's a dirty trick. Hard to push them more than just draft picks. They should lose a lot more.

This is probably something that everyone is doing, though. So, it's probably a level playing field.

Maybe that's how good 'ol Charlie Weis did so well as OC. He actually did know what the opposing defenses were calling.

I wondered about this as well... Is there really a rule against trying to figure out what the various hand signals mean?

Seems like it is just part of the game and if they wanted to know they could easily have had people in the stands videotaping everything (perhaps that is what happened).

Perhaps this is why the Jets always do so bad... They have been using the same hand signals for too many years

I would think that all NFL Stadium would have the following rules for carry ins as Lambeau Field.

        Security and Carry Ins

Police officers are stationed at each entrance gate to ensure your safety while visiting Lambeau Field. You and your belongings may be searched upon entry into the stadium. If you elect not to consent to being searched, you will be denied entry. Please be aware that carry-in policies my be modified from game to game as security levels change, and items permitted into the stadium may be determined at the discretion of each officer. Weapons, bags, backpacks, coolers, umbrellas, duffel bags, large purses, fanny packs, obstructive banners and signs are all strictly prohibited, as are food & beverages, video cameras and still photo cameras with lenses over 12 inches. As a general rule, please leave all unnecessary items at home.

Maybe it would help if the Jets stopped getting signaling advice from Larry Craig. It looked to me as if sometimes the Jets players were a bit surprised at the signals coming in from the bench.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

          “You shouldn't wear that body.”

No wonder Randy Moss was able to run by all of those Jets defensive backs. Shame on them.

and that in itself proves that the Raiders don't cheat like the Pats because Randy Moss didn't do squat the last two years.

                    Blown out of proportion

Belichick was wrong and should be and will be punished. However this did not impact this game as the camera was confiscated during the first quarter.
This has been going on for years in both baseball and football by ALL teams. Of course the Jets knew they were being taped. Jets Headcoach Man-Genius did it himself for years to other teams (including the Jets) when he was defensive coordinator under Belichick with the Patriots.
This is has to do more with the bad blood between Belichick and Mangini after his departure from New England to New York. Belichick was taping to get into Mangini's head, and Mangini, knowing that the taping was going on informed the commissioners office to get back into Belichick's head.
Even most of the talking heads on ESPN and SI readily admit that the
attempt to try to get a competitive edge by reading the opponents
signals has been part of the game for years. This is the first year
that the league has had in the rule in concerning the taping of the game.
Still photos like Polaroids always have been and continue to be allowed.
Belichick, being the arrogant (but brillant) individual that he is, thumbed his nose at the NFL commissioners office by defying the new league rule, got caught, and brought embarrassment to a great team and classy owner. The end result will be the Pats will lose a 3rd round draft choice (no big deal) forcing the league to eventually allow teams to be able to verbally call defenses thru helmut head pieces like all quarterbacks now do on offense. Professional sports is all about winning. Love him or hate him,
no one knows this nor does it better than Belichick. Lets put Belichick-gate behind us and bring on the Chargers!!! This game could be a preview of the AFC championship.
                    Go Pats!!!!

You are too committed to your team to be objective. They got caught red handed CHEATING. It doesn't matter that everyone does it. It is wrong to justify bad behavior by pointing to other bad behavior.

The Pats should lose a lot more than a few draft choices. They should have to forfeit the game, lose their first 2 draft choices and be put on probation.

In addition, they should be subject to forfeiting 100% of all games between today and the next time they get caught if it happens again.

It won't happen, but that's my opinion of the type of penalty they should receive.

Since I am still at the Crane in the Barbados, I haven't seen any U.S. sports or even a box score, however, if he cheated, it needs to be dealt with.

That puts him in the same league as the other cheaters; Pete Rose, Barroid Bonds, Giambi and all the others who have gone outside of the bounds of good sportsmanship and fair play.

Belichik lived in my town for a long time and was considered to be a good and decent man. Then we found out about his extra-marital relationship and now this.

                        How the mighty do fall.

I love my team, but cannot abide cheaters, sneaks, liars and hypocrites. Oh, add those who won't admit what they've done when caught.

How long has this been going on? And how many teams are doing it?

I find it strange that the Packers had 2 games at Lambeau Field that the other teams seemed to know what offense to call to beat the Packer defense..... The Pats and the Jets.

JS Online: Packers might get a call from league regarding Patriots' latest film flap

Green Bay - The National Football League might be giving the Green Bay Packers a call soon regarding the latest flap between the New England Patriots and New York Jets.

According to several news reports, the Patriots are being accused of placing a video photographer on the sideline of their game against the Jets Sunday in the Meadowlands in an attempt to steal signals from their AFC East rival. Jets security caught the photographer aiming his camera at Jets defensive coaches on the field and confiscated the video tape.

It has been forwarded it to the NFL for inspection.

ESPN.com reported that this might not be the first time that the Patriots have attempted to steal signals that way, citing an incident last year at Lambeau Field where a video photographer with a Patriots-issued credential was told to put his camera down during the Packers-Patriots game Nov. 19.

Packers spokesman Jeff Blumb confirmed that someone with a Patriots official pass was caught videotaping the game last year, but he said the Packers shut him down before the second quarter began because he was not part of the approved on-field photography pool. He said the Packers did not accuse him of stealing signals.

"We asked him to put the camera away and he did," Blumb said. "Then he went behind their bench and worked with their still video crew. He was not a pool cameraman."

Blumb said the Packers didn't confiscate his video. He said there was dialogue between the photographer and security officials about what he was doing, but the Packers didn't take any action other than to tell him to stop shooting the game.

"It was just regarded as strange," Blumb said. "There was no proof of anything."

Walt So you think the Jets used the same trick. if that was the case then why would they rat on the Pats if there doing the same thing? The Jets beat them because it was there day not because they cheated.

The pats have come out and said Sorry but they have not said what they are sorry for. I agree that I am sure other teams are doing this but it was the Pats that got caught. IMO The Comish should forfit all points scorded in the first half by the Pats and award them to the Jets. Then Fiine them and take away there first round picks. The pats know there caught they should come out and say Sorry were guilty of filming the signs not just say sorry.

When and What will Goodell do?

New England Patriots, National Football League - CBSSports.com

There are numerous stories about the New England Patriots as rampant rules breakers. These stories that were once non-corporeal and difficult to grasp have taken on new meaning in the face of cheating allegations against one of the most successful franchises in NFL history.

Belichick has earned more than a rep as a tactical mastermind. (AP)
The allegations have been there, but the proof, for some of them, absent. There are whispers about Patriots assistants secretly filming walk-throughs of other teams. There are stories of Patriots players on injured reserve practicing, which would be a clear violation of rules.

The problem with these stories is that they are like vapor: Difficult to see and grasp because of a code of secrecy that exists in the NFL. When NFL and Jets security officials confiscated a video camera and tape from a Patriots employee during New England's 38-14 victory over New York on Sunday, it was one of the few times the veil on NFL cheating was allegedly lifted.

                              But not the first time.

The Green Bay Packers have publicly said they caught a member of the Patriots organization filming the Packers' signals during a November game last year. The videographer, reportedly Matt Estrella and the same staffer involved in New York, was escorted from the field. What is not generally known is that Estrella was later caught filming from a nearby tunnel and was tossed from the stadium altogether.

Packers president Bob Harlan told reporters that upon being removed from the sideline, Estrella "had quite a fit when we took him out. We had gotten word before the game that they did this sort of thing, so we were looking into it."

The Patriots media guide lists Estrella's title as video assistant. The guide also says Estrella is in his third year with the team as full-time video assistant, and that his duties include editing game and practice tapes.

Longstanding rumors and stories about the Patriots using this methodology to steal signals were never accompanied by hardcore proof -- until now, that is, apparently in the possession of commissioner Roger Goodell.

Sunday's discovery might finally be the culmination of a belief that the Patriots, under Bill Belichick, are a team that pushes the envelope and sometimes crosses the line more than any other.

"I think that the Patriots live by the saying, 'If you're not cheating, you're not trying,'" San Diego running back LaDainian Tomlinson was quoted as saying Tuesday. "I'm not surprised because you keep hearing the different stories (and) people complaining about the stuff that they do."

A league source said the Denver Broncos, Packers, Jets and Buffalo Bills believe the Patriots have videotaped their signals before. The source also said other teams have phoned NFL Security with their suspicions since the story first broke.

There was such concern over rumors that the Patriots were using video cameras to steal signals over the past several years, a league source said, they were put "atop the league's watch list" for that type of rules violation. Goodell's fall of '06 warning to all 32 teams was mainly aimed at New England, the source said.

Cheating has been rampant in football for some time, say league executives, general managers, coaches, players and agents. Some years ago, for example, teams would flock to the San Francisco area for the East-West Shrine Game. Some coaches and scouts, however, would also take in a different site. They would go to the highest floor of a local hotel and, at the time unbeknown to the 49ers, would watch -- sometimes even film -- team practices.

Spying and attempting to steal tactical information have also been around since the beginning of professional football. "Stealing signals is an old art form," Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith once told me when he was the defensive coordinator of the Rams.

Videotaping signals has even occurred on the college level. Atlanta Falcons and former Louisville coach Bobby Petrino, when asked if sign-stealing occurring in college said: "Yeah, I think so. I think there have been some guys that have been identified in trying to do that. It's not what you're supposed to do. It's unethical and certainly there are always people everywhere trying to break the rules.

"Yeah, you can get an advantage. There's no question about it. We actually had a team last year we played (while at Louisville) that we heard was doing it so we had to have two people on the sideline signaling and going back and forth on whose live and who's dummy because you can certainly can gain an advantage."

So the Patriots certainly are not the first but they might be the best, and they could be hit hard for their actions.

According to league rules and bylaws, the commissioner possesses the authority to investigate and take disciplinary action if the NFL determines a team has engaged in unfair acts. Goodell's powers include the "imposition of monetary fines and draft choice forfeitures, suspension of persons involved, and, if appropriate, the reversal of a game's result or the rescheduling of a game, either from the beginning or from the point at which the extraordinary act occurred."

League sources are not ruling out a suspension for Belichick, though they think it is more likely multiple draft picks will be lost.

Whatever the punishment, it could be so stern that the amount of cheating might be drastically reduced for at least the near future.

"But it won't eliminate it altogether," said a former general manager. "There are always going to be teams who think the risk is worth the reward."
