  • More Americans Are Giving Up Golf

This is from an article in the NY times by PAUL VITELLO
    Published: February 21, 2008.

More Americans Are Giving Up Golf - New York Times

We have to change our mentality,” said Richard Rocchio, a public relations consultant.

“The problem is time,” offered Walter Hurney, a real estate developer. “There just isn’t enough time. Men won’t spend a whole day away from their family anymore.”

The disappearance of golfers over the past several years is part of a broader decline in outdoor activities — including tennis, swimming, hiking, biking and downhill skiing — according to a number of academic and recreation industry studies.

So, have you been playing more or less golf over the last 5 years?

    Why are you playing less?

I am playing less Golf. It takes too long to play.

For me golf is a like a hour walk in the park that takes 5 or more hours. If you belong to a private club you may be able to play 18 holes in 3 to 4 hours. Milwaukee and Southeastern Wisconsin has some great public Golf Courses, but it takes 5 1/2 to 6 hours to play them.

Some of the Southeastern Wisconsin Country Club having been trying to chance the image of the CC being a men's club to a family club by putting in water parks and new club houses with exercise rooms.

Exactly the same amount - none! Robin Williams' comedy routine on golf pretty much sums up my feelings towards the game.
Warning, the routine makes liberal use of the F*** word. Please don't click on the link if you or those around you would be offended.

The Robin Williams take is hilarious! Thanks for the laugh, jfitz!

I don't play nearly as much golf as I once did. It's just too time consuming to try to improve. I got down to single digit handicap, and from there it's just a ton of short game practice -- time I don't have. Plus, I still pretty much shoot the same scores without the practice. Maybe one day I'll get back into it, but it'll probably be awhile -- after the kids are older.

I'm actually starting to play more golf. I have no idea how I have the time, but's it's been there.
Are you my friend Danny? How about a Fresca?

I saw an article saying in some of the older Del Webb communities it was getting hard to keep up with the golf course because so few of the members were playing.

Wow Riverdee that is some news. I know that sun city in Phoenix area used to cost owners only about $1 to play, but maybe they are really, really old now.
We have heavy play at both courses we belong to, sometimes we can not gt on the course, even trying well in advance for te times

I'm not allowed to play golf anymore. After my first attempt, PETA threatened me because I was killing to many snakes and worms with my shots.

That first and only game was pretty decent. I shot a 98. Never did get around to playing that second hole.

The few times I've played I've been well-schooled to yell "Fore" with my frequent errant shots. Of course, that's usually followed by "Five." … "Six." … "Seven."

I guess I really don't like golf that much anyway.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

                    “You shouldn't wear that body.”

I am really good as I on the average only lose 3 balls and find 5 balls.

If I lived in the Wisconsin Dells area I might play golf a lot more as we get free Golf and Ski Lift Pases with our CMV UDI Oak Timbers ownerships.

                            Golf

                            Hmmm?

I have to say I golf much less now that my kids are in sports activities. I just cant waste one day of the weekend by myself (or with my friends) out on a golf course. Too much to do with yard work and chouffering my kids and coaching them in stuff. Let alone have wifey time.

Golf is fun, I love to be outdoors and have enjoyed it a lot over the years, but it is setup for people without youngsters. When I golf I feel guilty like I was ripping them off of their time with me. As my situation changes and the girls get older, maybe I'll play more.

Sounds like you spend a lot of time in the rough or snorkeling.
