My experience was when I tried to get tickets too early they told me to get the better seats wait until a day before and/or the day of the game. That was when the best seats become available. So we tried the afternoon the day before to see what they had and then the morning of the game. We were successful both ways.
I have not been in a couple of years but I cannot imagine it changing too much.

Attending a Yankees game is a very high priority item for us."If a Nation expects to be ignorant and free in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.... If we are to guard against ignorance and remain free, it is the responsibility of every American to be informed."
-- Thomas Jefferson to Col. Yancey, 1816
