  • Baseball lingo is too funny

    It’s different.

    Here are some examples:

Good Eye: Does that mean you have one bad eye?

Aren’t you supposed to keep both eyes on the ball?

Maybe that’s why I led the team in strikeouts. It was simply too difficult for me to keep one eye on the ball – and the other on a hot dog waiting for me in the dugout.

Rock and Fire (Fire is pronounced “far”): I can’t really explain this phrase. All I know is that it is meant for a pitcher to throw the ball hard.(I guess that’s where the fire comes into play.)

Meatball: This is an easy-to-hit pitch down the center of the plate. To me, this is the perfect complement to a hoagie bun and some cheese.

Uncle Charlie: This is the term used for a curve ball.

Can of Corn: This is when a fielder makes an easy catch. With food prices, there could be nothing easy about a can of corn.

Bean ball: This is near and dear to my heart. In Little League, our coach used to let all of us pitch one inning in the preseason.

I led the team in bean balls, which is the term used when a batter is hit by the ball. Maybe it was the “good eye” philosophy or the fact that I knew that if I hit batters, I would never have to be an active participant in the game.

Crackerjack: I thought this was the caramel corn I bought at the ballpark.

    Yes and No.

This is slang used for a team’s best player – a term never used for me.

Golden Sombrero: This is a term used for a person that strikes out four times in a game. Again, that could apply to me (Since I have a big head, maybe a sombrero would fit more comfortably than a hat.)

Caught looking: In my opinion, that phrase applies to married men.

IN OTHER NEWS: The 15th Region “All A” basketball tournaments could be held at the Eastern Kentucky Exposition Center, a source close to the tournament told me last week.

The participating schools, which include newcomers Sheldon Clark and Prestonsburg, voted on the measure last month. Negotiations are close to being completed.

This is a good move for the 15th Region “All A” Tournament, an event held to showcase smaller schools across the state. If this comes to fruition, this will give a smallschool tournament a bigtime atmosphere.

    See ya at the games…
