  • Parity in college football

Pretty amazing how much parity there is in college football these days. I just realized that the MWC went 4-0 yesterday against the Pac-10. Obviously, the marquee programs are still a ways above the rank and file, but the separation grows smaller every year. All the more reason to get rid of the BCS and go to some form of playoff system.

I agree. Even if one of these great MWC teams wins out, there's a good chance that they won't be playing for the national championship (although they better be in one of the BCS games).

Yep, I agree. There is parody in college football. Ohio State was a joke last night. USC totally dominated them.

The examples provided are not parity. It's mediocrity in several BCS conferences. It's just that outside of USC, the PAC-10 sucks. So does the entire ACC, the Big-10 and the Big East.

Right now, it's the top 3-4 SEC Teams, USC and the top 2-3 Big-12 teams at the top. Everyone else is second tier or lower. It's an embarassment of riches for the top teams. If anything, there is more concentration at the top.

I wouldn't think that any of these mid-majors would be in the NC game, but with the parity these days it's cool that there are multiple candidates to be the BCS buster this year (TCU, ECU, BYU, etc).

Boca, usually I agree with you, but not this time. I was pleased to see that perhaps USC isn't quite as spectacular as you think. What was that about parity.......?

Looking at this now, I can see where BYU would have a shot at the NC game if, and it's a big IF, BYU and Utah are both unbeaten when BYU travels to play the Utes. Should they win that game, and there are no other (or possibly 1 other) undefeated teams come the end of the season, it's entirely possible that BYU would play in the NC game. Not saying it's going to happen, but I see it as a possibility considering how highly they are currently ranked.

Might want to cross off USC, but add a few Big-12 teams.

I'm also not sure about the whole Big-T1e1n thing. Wisconsin was exposed as a fraud, losing to an offensively-inept Michigan (which I witnessed personally.)

Now UofU knocks off OSU to continue the MWC's dominance of the Pac-10. I note that Cal did beat CSU last weekend.

I am looking forward to the USC vs UofO game this weekend. USC should have some motivation after last year (and last weekend).

The OU / UT game is better than advertised thus far. Oklahoma up 28-27 mid 3rd quarter.

So it appears as though Oklahoma will face the winner of the SEC title game between Alabama and Florida for the national championship (provided OU beats Mizzou in the Big12 title game). Texas still has an outside shot at getting in.

It's worth noting that 4 of the top 12 teams in the BCS standings are from non-BCS conferences, but apparently only Utah will make a BCS game. Perhaps we'll have a playoff sooner than anticipated.

There certainly is parity in the Big 8 Plus Texas, as once again they will likely do themselves in, because of one too many games. \

There certainly are a lot of great quarterbacks this year. Look at just this conference alone!!!!

I suspect some of those NFL backups, with those multi-million contracts just to hang around, may be hanging it up soon.

It would appear that this year that won't happen.

Since someone bumped this thread, I just re-read it. Care to change your opinion?

The same teams that I mentioned early in the season are at the top now. USC is number 5 in the country. 10-1 is pretty dominant. This is their 7th season in a row with a 10 or more wins. And, it's their 7th consecutive PAC-10 championship. Prior to this streak, the most was 3 or 4. That is utterly dominant.

                            Idahodude,

What do you think now? USC is number 5 in the country. After we trounce UCLA on Saturday, we will be in our 4th consecutive Rose Bowl.

7 consecutive PAC-10 championships. 7 consecutive seasons with 10 or more victories.

USC's offense isn't spectacular, but USC's defense is MORE than spectacular. The rest of the BCS is lucky there isn't a playoff. USC is number 5, but I guarantee you that of the top 5, USC is one of the teams that others wouldn't want to draw in a playoff.

The others that the others would not want to draw are the other four.
