  • Super Bowl Sunday?

Is it just me or is there a lot less hype about the Super Bowl this year? I have hardly heard anything about it. I am not sure if it is because nobody cares about Pittsburg and Arizona or it is the economy. Probably a combination of the two. I still will do like I have done every Sunday for the last 4 months and go sit and watch it!

Just wait till next year - The PACK will be BACK!!

One reason there is less hype is that there is less advertising both for before and they say that even the adds for during the game are way down. Many companies have not signed on for adds this year and also many big companies that usually have big events going leading up to the game have cancelled having them this year. Less money, less hype.

      Tampa area

I'm in the Tampa area and it's all we've been hearing about. Not to excited about either team and personally I'll be glad when it's over.

We have had very little here too, and most of that is because Arizona has Fitgerald, who is from Minnesota. His Dad is still here and I think is/was a coach or teacher or something. So we hear those type stories, but you are right, no big Superbowl Shuffel or antics this year.

We will watch...DW will be in the steelers corner. Not for any reason other than that is what her father will cheer for. I will probably take the opposite side because of the Mn connection with arizona. I still expect steelers to win, but haven't watched enough football to really care one way or another.

I am in it for the commercials and the food. Guess I will need to get cooking soon.

NBC sells out Super Bowl ads for record $206M
            – NBC said on the eve of Sunday's Super Bowl that it has sold the last two of the 69 advertising spots for the game, pushing total ad revenue for the event to a record $206 million.

The network said its total of $261 million in ad revenue for all of Super Bowl day also is a record, calling it an especially impressive feat in the middle of the economy's steep downturn.

The Super Bowl is the premier advertising event with an U.S. audience of 100 million viewers, many of whom watch closely during game breaks for the debut of entertaining, big-budget commercials. The ads have sold for between $2.4 million and $3 million per 30-second slot this year.

"These advertising milestones show the power of the NFL brand and the strength of the Super Bowl as a TV property in this economic climate," said Jeff Zucker, president and CEO of NBC Universal, a unit of General Electric Co. "The Super Bowl has become one of our country's biggest holidays, a uniquely American day, and advertisers recognized the value in being a part of it."

Thirty-two advertisers in all will showcase their products during Super Bowl coverage.

NBC said the ads featured during the game also will be available for viewing almost immediately after they air at Web sites including NBC.com, Hulu.com and Superbowl.com.

Stupid question, isn't holding a 5 yd penalty?
And what was the deal with the cards passing the coin toss rights to the steelers?
I guess I have not watched enough football this year.

Defensive holding is 5yds. Offensive holding is 10yds.

I got grabbed by one of the commentators remarks about north/south and had to google it.

Q: Why do all football fields run north-south?

                —J.E.R.

A: Ah, if only all football fields did run north-south. Then I could give you the obvious answer—to keep the setting Sun out of players’ eyes—and be done with it.

Most football fields have their end zones in the north and south, but some don’t, and both the National Football League and the Pro Football Hall of Fame says they’ve never even noticed the north-south thing. (The NFL has no rules on stadium orientation.)

Of the 30 US professional football teams, 21 (70 percent) play on north-south fields. This distribution is not random and must have some significant value—Sun-avoidance being the most obvious.

But a full 30 percent run east-west, which paradoxically suggests that north-south can’t be that important. Even if we presume Sun avoidance is critical and take domed stadiums out of the equation (most were built whichever way they fit on the real estate), that still leaves six east-west fields open to the Sun (Philadelphia, Buffalo, San Diego, Kansas City, Carolina and Baltimore).

Likewise, of 10 major college teams I talked to, eight have north-south fields—the universities of Washington and North Carolina don’t.

Strangest of all, half of the 33 teams I asked about field orientation said there was no reason for it. The second most popular answer was keeping sun out of players’ eyes.

Among the east-westers, the Carolina Panthers say it’s the only way their field fit on the land. The University of Washington says it wanted its horseshoe-shaped stadium to open onto Lake Washington for looks. Others had no answer, except to say that the Sun didn’t bother their players.

The Sun sure bothers other sports. Columbus [Ohio] Crew spokesperson Jeff Wuerth says soccer fields almost always run north-south so the goalkeeper isn’t staring into the Sun. In the Crew’s under-construction stadium, “the upper-deck reserve tickets on the west side are a dollar more than on the east side,” because the east-siders will have the setting Sun in their eyes.

In football’s pre-stadium days, north-south orientation would keep the Sun out of players’ eyes. But in a giant stadium, in the fall and winter, the decks are high while the Sun is low in the sky. And with modern technology, visors can be added to receivers’ helmets to cut what little sun can get in.

My guess is that north-south was a necessity that faded into an unnecessary tradition.

Looks like Tampa is north-south so the remark was correct.

So far my favorite commercial was the Doritos crystal ball....

Washington is east and west so the stadium is open to the east and looking out on Lake Washington, very cool to see hundreds of boats pull up and tailgate on the lake before a game.

Yep, awesome view. But then again, they don't have to worry about sun issues in Seattle.

Great Super Bowl, BTW. Even though I was pulling for the Cards, it was a well played game by both teams and very exciting. One of the better Super Bowls in recent history.

I had the 6-0 Cards square in one of the office pools. I was in the money for all of 3 plays..........

Very surprisingly entertaining Superbowl. Doesn't compare to the Giants/Pats last year but definately up there in the better ones to watch.
