  • $75 of wine for $25 at Wine Insider's - today's Groupon

Limited selection but they will include shipping in the $75. Last time, I got 4 bottles delivered for $25. btw, I've been getting pretty decent offers from Groupon.

I've gotten two things from Groupon--usually they don't have anything I'm interested in, but I got a coupon for the local fancy fondue place and another one for a place that delivers propane tanks for gas grills.

I hate getting propane tanks and dragging them around--way too nerve-wracking! This place brings you a new tank and takes away your old tank. Usually it's $25 including delivery; with Groupon it was $12 and the service was fabulous. I'm into it. The website for the propane place is JackGas - Propane Tank Delivery, but the delivery was actually made by the local Modern Propane that we usually use.

Hey, I didn't get that Wine Insiders offer. I get the NYC Groupon and they just added the Northern NJ Groupon.

You can sign up for more than one location. I signed up for NYC and Long Island. The wine Groupon seems to be targeted to Long Island - maybe we drink more than the folks in NJ?
It shouldn't be a shipping issue since you get WTSO.

A couple of weeks ago I got a groupon for a 1hr mini hot stone massage. I bought 2, and on Sat DH and I both went. It is regularly $90, I got it for $40, and it was heavenly!

I regret not getting the keratin treatment at the salon in NYC. Oldest DD's hair is out of control in this weather!

I just remembered I'm supposed to have lunch with a friend b/c she bought a gift certificate to a restaurant in Hell's Kitchen a couple of weeks ago....

I did buy one of these WineInsiders groupons and it's not worth it. I've been trying for four months to use my coupons, but I haven't found anything. At the time I bought the coupon it looked like they had a couple of things I might use it on. But lately nothing.

To put it bluntly, the vast bulk of their inventory appears to be pure plonk, produced by industrial wineries in California similar to Bronco, sourcing grapes from wherever they can get them and slapping a label on the bottle. And it's priced about 2x to 3x above what the same quality stuff sells for at the Rite-Aid drugstore down the street from us. (Bronco is the same outfit that produces Charles Shaw for Trader Joes - nice at three bucks but not worth it at $10 to $20/bottle, which is what WineInsiders wants for it. I wouldn't be the least surprised if most of the generic California wines offered at WineInsiders actually was produced by Bronco.)

Where they do offer something that is produced by a specific winery, I've found that the winery has almost no track record, and if it does the winery has a history of producing pretty marginal product.

Recently they did get in a white Bordeaux and red southern Rhone which I did decide to try, because it doesn't appear to be grossly overpriced (only moderately overpriced) and appeared to have some potential. Based on what I had seen at the site to date I figured I might not get a better opportunity before my Groupon expired. If its OK stuff, I'll do OK because of the Groupon discount.

But in my opinion this is decidedly an operation to stay away from. If you want to order wine online, wine.woot and WTSO offer better value for less money even after applying the Groupon discount. Without the Groupon discount you would easily do better at a local grocery store pulling bottles at random. And if you go into any half-decent wine shop, for the same money you would spend at Groupon they can put together a vastly better assemblage.

I got lucky and found a red I really liked the first time I got the coupon. Then I foolishly got a second coupon without checking the site first, thinking I could get the same wine, but they no longer carried it. Caveat Emptor.

I didn't get this the first time Groupon had it--I got it the second time, having worked it out that it was just about worthwhile. But the rules had already changed. I used it right away, maybe a year ago, and got one of their mixed cases. I think the wine came down to about $7-8 per bottle including shipping. Some of it has been okay, some has been ick. Now I think they've changed the deal a couple more times, so the price per bottle is more like $12 including shipping, and that's too high for me not to know exactly what I'm getting. I wouldn't do it again, but for $8 a bottle, the wine was mostly fine.

Except that their wine costs at least twice as much as you would pay for it - or similar quality - elsewhere; maybe three times as much. So when you get the Groupon, which is $75 for $25 of wine, you're only back to somewhere around what it should have been priced at in the first place. And that assumes you buy a full case so you can get the $0.01 shipping.

Meanwhile for the same amount of money you can get better juice from WTSO or wine.woot, with reasonable assurance that you are getting good quality stuff.
