"I recently sat down with the winemaker at Benessere in St. Helena and it is clear the winery takes particular pride and resources in making the very best Sangiovese in Napa Valley. And it is this varietal that gets good reviews and wide praise as Benessere strives to be a slice of Tuscany in Napa Valley. This Estate wine from Napa Valley’s St. Helena appellation has very pleasant aromas of red cherries, and plums with floral and spice notes. This wine is medium bodied with sweet plum, red jam, black cherry with touches of cocoa and well integrated French oak. Well crafted and intricate with smooth, round tannins. Will pair nicely with Veal Parmesan, Rosemary Chicken, Pasta with Italian Sausage, and grilled meats. A very versatile and enjoyable food wine for traditional fall and winter dishes."(jn)

I considered that one a bit. But my personal experiences with Newman's reviews are inconsistent, and I've my experiences with Napa wines are that there seem to be a greater percentage of those that aren't worth the price paid.

IOW - for making an untasted purchase, I find that my chances of overpaying are signficantly greater with a Napa valley wine. I surmise that means that if there is an added quality to Napa wines, it's a difference that's often lost on me.

There was a 2005 tempranillo that was up earlier today that I bought last time around. I tried one bottle, and then stuck the other three bottles away in my under that stairway , next to the foundation storage area for another couple of years. still a lot of strong tannin hanging around in that one.

The cheapskate Wednesday is coming up. Unfortunately I'm going to be out of the country. Or maybe that's fortunate.

If they offer the Pasamonte tempranillo that's a good buy for about $12.

Also just before Christmas I bought six Bodegas Peñafil Miros de Ribera Reserva 'Coleccion Privida' 2001 for about $17.50. That was an excellent buy, and I would get more if I could get the chance.

In case you can't tell, I've become very partial to Spanish reds, and that's totally due to comments made by folks here. I was encouraged to take a couple of chances, which have worked out very well.

I find that lately I buy very little Pinot, because I can always find some Spanish or Italian red (or a Calfornia Sangio or Tempranillo) that I find equally appealing at much less money.

Apparently I'm not the only person who really liked this one. If you like tempranillos and spanish reds, I think this is a great buy if it shows up on Cheapskate Wednesday next week.
