    Pear Valley Vineyards - 2005 Syrah $60/case + shipping

    Todays wine.woot is a Pear Valley four-bottle mixed white offering. During the discussion mention was made of the winery's current offering of a 2005 Syrah at $60/case + shipping (probably $30 to $35 for East Coast). This is about half the wine club price for their other syrahs, and less then one-third their site retail price.

    Since this is a winery offering (not the wine.woot daily special) it should be around for awhile. I have a lot of confidence in the wineries that Dave Studdert brings in at wine.woot - though some wines may not be to my style, I don't think any of the wineries are plonk producers. So I figured this looked like a good bet. Worst is that it might match the price, and is something that can be brought to parties and barbecues.

    I'll check back in when I've had some after it arrives later this week and has some time to settle down after the shipping.

    An very nice syrah for the price. I've had two bottles.

    Syrah is generally not my favorite wine; I figure that if I enjoy a syrah it must be good. The first bottle didn't impress me right away; just seemed like typical OK syrah. Not unpleasant, but just not the flavor profile I generally prefer. Finished half the bottle the first day; the second day was much better - had opened up quite a bit.

    The second bottle was quite enjoyable. It was more open, almost from the moment I opened the bottle. Good representation of darker fruits. But what I particularly noted was that it was the acids, alcohols, and tannins seemed to be well balanced, and there was a reasonably long flavor profile. In fact, the flavor is still persisting as I type this. There's still a fair amount of tannin so it's not necessarily a "drink now" wine, but I don't think I would hold onto it for much more than a year, possibly two.

    Maybe the first bottle hadn't settled down yet - I received the shipment three days earlier.

    At about $7 to $8/bottle (your price will depend on shipping) I think this is a very good value. Better than almost any syrah you would get at TJs in that price range.

      Bumping this back up. Had another bottle of this last night. This is a nice sturdy syrah. Probably a bit more old world styled - not a fruit bomb as I've had with other syrahs. (That, to me, is a good thing.)

      Darker berry fruits predominate. Seemed well integrated - no senses of heat or heavy tannin and had a reasonably long finish. Needs an hour or more of decanting to really open up. Might hold up for a few more years, but I don't think I would hold it too much longer.

      At less than $10 bottle delivered this is a great buy if they haven't sold out.

        I took advantage of this offer. $30 shipping to me; $7.50 per bottle of wine is a good price.

          I should have checked to see how it shipped. FedEX ground is the worse I have ever had for wine delivery. I literally was chasing the truck (on foot) the other day. I didn't catch him and of course. When I called the number on the door tag, there is no way for FedEx to contact their drivers. We are trying for another delivery attemp today, but who knows when he will show up. If we can't connect today, I will have to pick up the wine.

          There is a FedEx world/air pickup point about 4 miles from my home and very easy access. FedEx ground has smaller sites scattered around, but I can't go to the one less than 4 miles, I have to go to the one that takes 20 minutes to get there and of course 20 minutes back.

          Next time I ask who is the carrier for the wine.

            After waiting at home all day, not able to even walk to the garden to see how the tomatoes are doing (very well, thanks for asking) he finally showed up about 5:30pm.

            Normally I wouldn't open a shipped wine for a few weeks to a month. But I was very curious about the wine.

            My first impression wasn't good. I opened it up, poured it into a glass, thought the nose a little off and when I tasted it...waaaay too much tannins for a 2005. I aerated the wine, that tannins backed down, the nose opened up and it was nice. Another half hour in the glass, the nose really started showing good aromas; vanilla, black current, cherry. Tannin well in balance with the wine. Favors were good and the wine was very drinkable. I will need to lay the wine down for a couple years to let it mature or will need to decant it if I want to serve it earlier.

            I served the wine last night with probably the best steak I have ever eaten. Slow smoked it on my Big Green Egg for about 15-20 minutes until the internal temp was about 95-100 deg, pulled the steak off and brought the grill up to about 500 deg. I put the steak on, flipped it after 2 minutes, flipped it at 2 minutes again and as the skies were getting very dark and the sirens were sounding, I pulled the steak, shut down the smoker/grill and headed for cover. The steak rested for 10 minutes and got to 128 deg. Ate the steak as we watched the weather warnings. Wonderful flavor. Made a place in the basement in case we headed down. The heavy storms stayed a few miles from us, 2 tornadoes, hail and lots of rain. We still got small hail and 4 inches of rain in 2 days.

            I guess I will think of that wine and the events and how the whole night was amazing which started with that first glass.

              Pretty similar to my experiences as well, particularly regarding bottle transportation shock. The last couple of bottles I've opened have been much better. And decanting is essential.

              I'm thinking about getting another case; if I do I'll probably lay away about six bottles.
