  • My brother asked for a Case of wine for his 35th Birthday...

He ALSO just bought a house and is looking to stock the shelves.....But i know NOTHING about wine....

What would you include in a 35th Birthday / House Warming Case of Wine? Or is it better to buy a pre-assigned assortment, but from where?

First off what do you want to spend? A great wine that can be bought for $30 a bottle is Ruffino Ducal de Oro or better known as Ruffino gold. As case can be bought for $330 in some places and I think there is a cash only place not far from you in New Hyde park that you can get a great cash only deal at

Everyone had different tastes in wine. Frank may tend to Italian, Trog may love Spanish, I like Napa and Sonoma. So finding what your brother may have for taste profile may be difficult unless he just wants wine. In that case, I would buy a mixed case of wines, a few whites but more reds.

Suggestions of a few possible wines (as grape varietals):
Whites-Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling.
      Reds-Cabernet, Malbec, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir.

If asking you gets a case of wine I would like a case of mixed wine(red). I will drink them and let you know if any of these would work!

If someone was going to get a case of wine for me, they could drop out most of the whites. I can go for the Pinot Grigio, or a nice Sauvignon Blanc in the summer and the reds I listed are pretty good, but I am a big Zinner. I do find places for a good cab (I love my rib eye steak on the big green egg with a full big bodied cab) and a pinot noir goes wonderfully with a nice pork roast, but I can do a zin on almost any occasion or food (BBQ, pizza, even chicken).

I agree you should get a mixed case. Many local wine shops will give you a 10- 20% discount if you buy a case. It doesn't have to be the same label and the owner/manager should be helpful in recommending good selections in your price range.

If your bro is looking to stock "shelves," for long-term use, I would stick to reds. I would stick to reds anyway for the most part.

I'm not Vintner, but without consulting him first I am CERTAIN he did not mean white! If I'm wrong, I'll eat my hat. Or give up my last name

If anyone is allowed to speak for me in this case, you are the one.

I like Big and Bold Zins, not the squeezings of the red grape resulting in the white zin.

As many of you know, White Zin started as the process of removing some of the juice from the red zin grapes concentrating the flavors. The winery had the juice left over that they didn't know what to do with it. They fermented it, and little old ladies (of any age or gender ) like that stuff.

It's a tough task to select a number of wines for someone if you don't know anything about their preferences, but you've got a lot of solid advice. Stick primarily to the reds, and throw in a couple of bottles of whites.

Guess I fit the Little Ole ladies category, I like White Zin.
