For three months now I have not been getting any wine shipments (save for one wine.woot offering) due to summer heat. Now the first of my backlogged orders at wtso are out of the warehouse, on the cross country truck, and due to arrive next week. Rosé, sangio, and viognier will get here first. Then after a two-week hiatus some cab and bordeaux will appear followed one week later by crianza, verdejo, albariño, and zin. The shipping burst concludes the following week with a tinto blend and priorat.

It's going to be a bit too much to hide from DW. I have the rosé and viognier arriving first, because if we open a bottle of those the whole thing will be easier for her to swallow.

Sounds like a good plan! I also like viognier. As for rosé...not too much.

Because we're in Arizona when we're in the U.S., our orders are being shipped October 1st. We're excited about their arrival--just hoping October 1st is late enough.

We're not rose fans--what's different about this one? What do you like it with, or do you like sipping it before dinner? I'm always willing to learn.

I have not had this specific rosé yet. Within the last year, though, I got acquainted with some rosés that altered my thinking. Most of the time when I think of rosés I've thought of them as sweet or at best semi-dry, with some vague and muddled fruit notes, often flabby especially as they warm up, and not having a lot of complexity. Much the same impression of common cheap sauvignon blanc.

But then I got exposed to some that were crisp, vibrant, and dry, and stayed that way in the glass. In fact as they opened up they started to reveal even more flavors. The added skin contact gave them a bit more structure. Totally changed my impressions of rosé. Since then I've kind of kept an eye out for reasonably priced rosés that look like they might fit that profile. This looked like it might fit. Some of the notes on CellarTracker suggested this one might fit the profile What tipped me was the comments by Snoman, who is a fellow vino I know on the net, and who comments intelligently and with preferences that are similar to mine.

[Added note]: This was the juice that changed my mind. I bought it because I have found that Pedroncelli wines are generally good value for the money. I was unfamiliar with "dry rosé", but since one of my chief complaints about rosés was the sweetness and this was a Pedroncelli offering, I decided it was worth a try.

I missed the Taurus last time it was up, and I suspect that by now it's probably sold out. I only have one bottle remaining, so I'm guarding it a bit.

I did catch the Marco Real crianza when it appeared a few weeks ago, and that is another buy offering similar to the Taurus at the same price point. It's a bit more forward and doesn't require the same amount of decanting. But otherwise it's similar. I've got a case of that coming.

I suspect the Tourbillon will show up again sometime - likely during a cheapskate if not as a regular offering.

BigFrank was the one who got me started with wtso, and that has been my introduction to European wines. As might be gathered from my opening post, now most of what I purchase from wtso is European, particularly Italian and Spanish. To my palate, that's where the value is right now. Not to say that there aren't great reasonably priced wines being produced in North America. But my "hit rate" is generally higher with European wines than with North American.

So the Rosé arrived today, and I opened a bottle this evening without even giving it a chance to acclimate. It's slightly chilled - probably 55° - 60° F.

So how is this not your grandmother's rosé, you ask.

It's almost exactly as I was confident it would be. A light salmon color - not pink. Very good nose - strawberries, citrus, and some floral in the background (rose? lilac?). In the mouth the flavors come through immediately and then sustain and evolve for a quite a awhile. The floral notes are muted in the palate, but some melony tastes come out. There's just a touch of effervescence. A bit of tannin comes through after a minute or two. Appears to me to be almost bone dry; there's a bit of apparent sweetness but that comes from the fruit notes, not from any residual sugar. There's a bit of acidity and a trace of heat, but all very well balanced. I'm sitting here about five minutes after having had a sip and I can still taste bright flavors, and feel a bit of the tannin and acidity. It has not gone the least bit flat or lost any zip.

This is very easy to quaff on it's own sitting on the deck, and it should also be stupid-good with seafood where the acidity and citrus notes can shine. I would not drink this chilled below 50° F; if you do a lot of the complexity will be lost.

I am glad I got a case of this stuff. Seems to me that it's got enough presence to hold up for about a year.

Sweet and insipid this is not. This is dry, robust and complex. At the $10.99/bottle WTSO price it's a great buy.

Inundation week. I've got 6 shipments arriving this week, with four scheduled for tomorrow. Fortunately I'm home during the day so I can hide them away before DW sees them. If I slowly bring them out of storage over the next several months she'll never know.

I have been enjoying the Provencal roses for a couple of years, definitely not sweet, and almost always a good bet. $10.99 for a nice bottle is a good deal, though; I will keep my eyes open for it again.

I bought six initially, just because I thought it looked like a good bet at the price. But I put it on hold until the end of the summer. Then over at CT a number of reviews came in, and people were gushing about it. So when it showed a second time at WTSO I jumped in on another six.

This is great stuff. I've spent years staying away from rosés because of the insipidness of most of the stuff that comes off the shelf. Someone made a comment one time that made me think I had been too dismissive; that was what led me to consider this the first time. One sip and I knew the problem wasn't rosé; it was that I hadn't had a good rosé. Had a similar experience one time with pinot gris, where I realized that the reason I didn't much care for gris was because I hadn't even had a good bottle of gris.
