  • What to do in Napa Valley

We just got back from visiting my son and his family for 5 days in Sacramento and 2 days in Napa Valley. We took tours at the following 2 wineries.

The wine was very good to excellent. The tours, while not cheap, were well worth the fee. Samples included a 1997 J. Schram Late Disgorged , 150th Anniversary $200.00 a bottle sample. Read the stories of both wineries. Very interest stories.

"My initial intent was to build an 8,500 square-foot building without cellars. (Gradually it morphed into 121,000 square feet with 107 rooms with four separate levels underground and four levels above!" Dario Sattui

We also did wine tasting at,

And we had to go to this winery. Right Big Frank?

You can only get the wine at Castello Di Amorosa and V.Sattui in Napa Valley or by being a member of their wine clubs. I think the wine is very good and my wife and I are members of their wine clubs.

Do you have any other interesting Wineries on your list?

I enjoyed Chateau Montelena and Frog's Leap.

CM was featured in the movie Bottle Shock and we got signed DVDs from the owners.

Best Things to Do in Napa Valley

People come to Napa Valley to taste the grapes -- plain and simple. With several hundred wineries to sample from and tour, you'll have to be selective. Large producers like the Robert Mondavi Winery draw big crowds with their name recognition. However, more intimate properties like the O'Brien Estate might be more enjoyable for you if you like personal attention and customized tours. When you tire of wine-tastings, di Rosa, an open-air art preserve, is a refreshing option.

Shram is (or used to be) the sparkling of the White House. We love the smaller wineries - Goose Cross, Pina, Miner, Vincent Arroyo. Next time I'd try some others we've not heard of before.

Far Niente requires reservations well in advance in season, btw.
