    SHALLOW WARNING

The South African Chardonnay that's up right now ($16) has such a pretty bottle and label. I'm not buying it, but it is very good-looking.

Oh, well. "OK" is not nearly glowing enough anyway.

A friend just stopped by and I gave her a bottle of the Duboeuf we had last night to try. Like many of my friends, she loves a glass of wine and her husband doesn't drink. I think I'm the pusher for a whole neighborhood of secret wino ladies.

        Petite Syrah

        FROM THE WINEMAKER
First produced in 1978 by the Bogle family, this 2005 Petite Sirah is considered Bogle’s “heritage” varietal. On the nose, luscious boysenberry teases you along with touches of black pepper and herbs. Trademark inky and jammy tones fill the mouth with ripe fruit and berries. The voluptuous finish lingers with toasty oak and lush fruit. The firm tannin make this a wine that can develop for years to come, but you won’t want to wait that long to enjoy it!

SERVED BEST WITH: Try this unique wine with rich meat dishes of lamb, pork or game and their hearty sauces.

It's just not discounted enough for me. I think I've seen it around here for a comparable price. I am truly cheap.

Gabbiano Bonello Merlot Nero D’Avola 2004

Bonello's Merlot/Nero d'Avola is a deep ruby red color. On the nose, there are fragrant aromas of blueberry, raspberry and dark fruit. Soft, ripe cherry flavors, and a hint of tart acidity. The medium-bodied wine has soft, well-integrated tannins, and finishes long. - Winemaker Notes

            Match: Pasta

            Producer Notes:

The fruit for this wine was sourced from valley and hillside vineyards on the Salento peninsula located in Puglia of southern Italy. The red soils of Salento, consisting of a calcareous base overlain by topsoils rich in iron, create an ideal viticultural environment. The Adriatic and the Ionian seas that border the peninsula bring a welcome cooling influence at night, tempering the hot summer heat. Primitivo, a native Italian varietal is the same as Californian Zinfandel. It is still grown on low, individual, bush-like training systems that create robust, fruity and strongly spicy red wines.

            About the Producer:

Owned by Foster's Wine Estates, Castello di Gabbiano is a picturesque property located in the Chianti Classico region on the outskirts of Florence. Perched on a hillside with a historic castle, winery and restaurant, the property is a wine lover's dream destination. To make its well-priced Tuscan red, the 2003 Gabbiano Chianti, winemaker Giancarlo Roman uses fruit grown in the larger Chianti region. It's a classically styled version with dusty aromas, bright cherry flavors and a touch of tannin.

Stay with this trusted producer and take a sojourn south by uncorking Gabbiano's new project in Sicily. The Italian island is home to a signature grape named Nero d'Avola and Gabbiano's new brand, Bonello, blends the hearty grape with Merlot in the 2003 Bonello Sicily Merlot-Nero d'Avola. With a round texture and smoky undertones, this is a fresh take on an Old World variety.

I let quite a few appealing things go today, I'm just afraid I won't be around for delivery next week and my family is away.

I was downstairs making dinner and working on a project. I would have tried Frank's "strong" wine, but I missed it! Darn. Now that Wolftrap that Frank hailed as "OK" is back up.

When I make an order, I've been writing a note in the Comments box asking them not to deliver from this date to that date. Also I saw my Fedex Ground guy today and told him that I would be away. No problems with this yet, the Fedex guy holds the wine for me even if I forget to tell the wine people. You can also call Fedex when you are going away and ask them to hold things for a certain amount of time.

I don't trust Fedex with wine in the winter, their storage facilities are too cold. But the wine site really does do a good job of holding the shipments, I just completely forgot about it.
