  • Staying in China

I thought DAE would be the way to go, but they aren't really doing business there yet. Which exchange company would be The One to use? Or, would it be best to rent?

    Thanks for any ideas.

Personally I'd opt for a tour, there are some pretty low-cost ones. Actually I've always wanted to do that... Check these out:

7-Day Beijing SuperValue (scroll to the bottom of price grid, under $1000 per person including airfare, hotel, some meals + tours)

They have longer tours, more destinations, and more expensive too.
China Tours, Yangtze River Tour, China Tour, Travel Asia, Yangtze River

And here's a totally surprising one:
Jewish Heritage Tour - Yangtze River, Jewish Diaspora, Silk Road

I've seen a few available in RCI for future dates. They're smaller units - studio or 1br. Can you do an online search with RCI?

I'd hate to tie up my week with an ongoing, but my brother is a professional swim coach and is going to the Olympics in Beijing. No tour for him, just a place to stay. He's not picky about accomodations, but I was hoping for a larger unit because one of his swimmers and his parents may be going, too.

He'd be fine cramped into 'whatever' and really only needs Beijing the first week, while swimming is going on, and then can go somewhere else in China.

If RCI is the best shot at it, then, why not give er a go?

        Thanks for the help!

I think that RCI would be your best bet, I see some places in China pretty often, not sure if they are Beijing tho. Even if there are some Beijing you may have trouble trading for there during the Olympics. If I had a timeshare there I wouldn't deposit it in RCI, I think I would rent it instead.

I wasn't optimistic about getting Beijing and figured the second week "somewhere else in China" would be the one that hit. How wonderful to search for someone that is not in the least bit picky!!

I see Beijing, and Shanghai in II periodically.

But right now there is only this, for the next two years:

There are about 6 timeshares in Beijing: 2 way out of town and 4 in town. There are all tough trades. Given the relative lower costs of hotel accommodation, I doubt it if TS is an economical option.

I have seen one TS at II during off seasons, usually in December when the weather is not so good.

There are 2 nice resorts else where in China. Shanghai SunIsland, where I stayed twice, has lots of availability at II. There is one out west (forgot the name): good location, quality resort and lots of availability in RCI.

Look for service apartments in Beijing as an alternative to TS. However, not easy during Olympics. I am going to the Olympics, but will stay with a relative of my colleague at work.

During the Atlanta Olympics, many suburbs around Atlanta served as hosts to Olympian friends and families. Kind of taking in foreign exchange students. My friend's town, in particular, hosted a lot of Ukrainians. You might want to look into your Olympic committee to see if there are any organizations that could set you up. As for traditional accommodations, expect to be gouged this far ahead.

I have a feeling because of the distance, the pollution, and China's determination to use the Olympics as a propaganda tool, many traditional sports fans are not going to make the trip. The London Olympics are going to be much more attractive than 2008 Beijing. I think there probably are going to be thousands of rooms opening up close to the Opening ceremonies as people cancel or tours are not sold. So whatever you get, try to make sure you can cancel if something better pops up.

Though, I'm sure the Aussies will show up full force to support their swimmers.

Seems to be a lot of bringing up old threads with that one. One sentence on a 2 year old thread doesn't do anyone any good.

I have seen some links attached to a couple of the threads that I really have no idea what or why they are there, or why someone hasn't removed the links.
