  • A visit to Poovar can be relaxing and rejuvenating

Kerala has a unique kaleidoscope of natural beauty, culture and tradition. It is this intriguing mixture that lures many tourists from far off lands. It is an absolute family destination with something in store for everyone in the family. For those who revel in the sun and sand, there are pristine beaches with golden sands. For the religious minded, there are umpteen numbers of temple and temple towns. For the young at heart and of all ages there are other backwater retreats that are away from the busy bustling and jostling city life.

One place that is sure to mesmerize one and all is Poovar. This island is not far from the state capital, Thiruvanandapuram. It is fifteen minute boat ride from there. This island has backwaters on one side and the Arabian Sea on the other. The beauty of this place is accentuated by the presence of the Neyyar River, lakes, canals and estuaries. Even Raja Marthanda Varma, the erstwhile King of Travancore was mesmerized by the beauty of this place. He named this place Poovar after he saw a bunch of red flowers floating in the river. He called it Poo-aar which means a stream of flowers.

The Poovar beach is the major attraction here. It is outlined by the backwaters on one side and the sea on the other. There is a fishing village nearby. A visit to this village is a must-do activity. In Poovar, one must enjoy a ride in the water taxis which is the only available transport to the mainland. It is a place that is meant for relaxing and rejuvenating away from the busy city life. This can be accessed from Thiruvanandapuram. It is a fifteen boat ride from there. It is also close to Kovalam, the famous beach destination. Poovar climate is pleasant, summers are temperate and winters are mild. The rains are a mood dampener during the months of June- October. But tourists come here throughout the year to enjoy the natural beauty of this land unmindful of the weather. Ayurveda is another major attraction for the tourists here. There are a number of Ayurvedic retreats in and around Poovar.

To me this looks like a Spam ad but since it has to do with travel I will leave it up to the moderator of the forum if they want to leave this up.
