  • Montreal - Old City or Downtown?

Trying to decide between these two:

Downtown: Loews Hotel Vogue Loews Hotel Vogue (Montreal, Canada) - Hotel Reviews - TripAdvisor

    or

Old Montreal: Le Saint-Sulpice (Montreal, Canada) - Hotel Reviews - TripAdvisor

Expedia has great package deals, btw

Are you looking for recommendations, or just passing along information?

We stayed here several years ago and really liked it. It's ranked #3 in tripadvisor. To be honest I don't know if it would be considered downtown, or Old Montreal.

I was trying to decide between the two areas, just pulled the trigger on the one in the Old City.
Thanks for the reco, though. eta: You're right, I was rushing so much my post was not clear - sorry about that. I think I fixed it for any future viewers.

We actually once stayed at the Loew's, and it was nice, but I'd vote for the old city any day.

Oh, thank you, that makes me feel better about my very rash decision!

Old town for you two for sure would have been my recommend.

Restaurants -- i know you will research - start with these choices ---

            chez la mere michel

            gibbys

            la maree (seafood)

            They were excellent in 1982
(yes this is correct)and have continued to be highly rated although given my audience (Those Kids) I haven't kept up 100% the way i used to.

Gibbys quite the unique setting. walkable to old town.

Chez la mere moved since we went but was stunning then, hope still is, now a brownstone type bldg., longer walk or easy cab from hotel.

and la maree is right smack in old town
Excited for you and glad you are doing this. Happy 30th

We checked in to Le Saint Sulpice a little while ago, this place is AWESOME. Go Expedia! We are right next to Notre Dame in a AAA 4 Diamond boutique hotel. Room is a 550sf suite with partial kitchen, fireplace and balcony overlooking courtyard with a view of the top of Notre Dame. Luxe bath with Occitane products. And free wifi!

Irene, we are having dinner tonight at Chez La Mere Michel, still high on the recommend list, I will report back!

                  Sounds great!

I've been trying to get to Montreal & Quebec City since last year.....I'll get there one of these days. I'm really looking forward to your report.

                  Enjoy your dinner.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Gibby's! That's the restaurant with the caesar salad and the flaming coffee drink!

Enjoy Montreal it is such a fabulous city! I lived there for a semester in college in 1995 and attended McGill University. I was too poor to eat in good restaurants but loved every minute!

I went to McGill when the earth's crust was cooling and I was a VERY poor student, but it was still a wonderful city to live in for those four years!

It is a wonderful city. We will be back!

Chez la Mere Michel was fantastic. Out of the way, but fabu. Gibby's looks great, very spendy, formal/classic french - would try it if we hadn't already done the classic french dinner on Wednesday.

As luck would have it, today is the official start of the "summer" season here - it is a long weekend (a week ahead of US Memorial Day), and the first day they close certain streets for pedestrians only (Rue St Catherine, Rue St Paul [?].

And though I almost canceled due to poor weather forecast, it has been beautiful here!!

One of our cousins came from Montreal in fact she still goes there since she has a lot of famaily there. I was hoping to see her so I could ask her what to do in the area for you but we did not get together at all this past month.

Glad you went to Mere Michel and ENJOYED ----and good to hear all is going well and you are enjoying the city.

Montreal has more festivals than any other city, they say. An excuse to party every other weekend. We had that winter ice thing when we were there, and there were others a few weeks before and after...
