  • Morritt's Grand: what a view....

It took almost 2 years, but I finally got to check into my very first timeshare exchange, Morritt's Grand. I have a beautifully large, Oceanfront unit on the 4th floor that has vaulted ceilings, Corian countertops, large jucuzzi and a magnificent view of the lagoon.

I made the exchange on August 20, 2004 as a 44,000 point crossover trade between RCI Points and RCI weeks. Based on how nice this resort is, it would have been worth twice that. After 2 years of reflecting upon Carolinian's assertions regarding the unfair crossover grid, I have determine that he was half right. He was right that it was set at an unfair level. But, he wasn't right about that low level enabling the demise of timesharing. In the 2 years it took me to actually use this exchange, I have had a lifetime of experiences in timesharing. So, even if the crossover grid remained the same, it would probably take 20 years to be impacted by much if I had to wait 2 years for every exchange.

Getting here wasn't easy. We got fairly cheap tickets on Spirit Airlines from Fort Lauderdale and the flight time was supposed to be 66 minutes. So, it seemed like it would be easier to get here than going to Atlanta....wrong.

It took 1.5 hours to go from the check in line to being seated on the plane. And, when we arrived, they lost a piece of our luggage, so we ended up staying extra time at the airport. Oh well, such is life. I just hope they are able to deliver that bag to us today since it has all of our masks, fins and snorkles in it. We'll find out in a couple of hours.

The nicest thing about being here is the people. At the recommendation of a TS4M poster who I don't remember, I booked a car rental from McCurley's. Beth Ann McCurley picked us up from the airport and drove us to the Morritt's. She was really nice, told us all the must do activities and restaurants and was simply pleasant over all. She took us by her house and offered to sell us some oceanfront property for $750k. Well, she was joking since she had already sold it to a group of 10 people for that much. They plan on building a 4000 sq ft house on that 200 feet of oceanfront property on the east end and split the usage amongst them. $1.5M for an oceanfront property seems like a great deal to me.

Then, when we got to the Morritt's, BA (short for Beth Ann) told us how to use the car and the rules of the road and told us that the best burgers on the island were at the Reef. Since we had some time before checking into our unit, we decided to go there for lunch. What a spectular outdoor bar. We had a very nice cool ocean breeze cooling us off from what is clearly a hot and humid day even for a Floridian. We were worried about all the reports of high prices for food, so we were surprised that 4 of us were able to eat for $47 USD. A bit high, but not exhorbitant compared to say Tahiti. The burger was average at about a 6, but the chicken and cheese quesadillas were great.

The person checking us in was the most pleasant person I've ever encountered in timesharing. We had a lot of bags, and they delivered them to our room. That was great.

We are all very relaxed now and we are going out to explore. Can't wait to get some diving in. We will probably do that later in the week.

Oh yeah, at the strong recommendation from other timesharers, we brough a cooler with a lot of our own food. Mostly meats since we knew we could get package goods here. The recommendations worked fabulously as we didn't have any issues getting through customs. Thanks guys.

    More later as it happens.

P.S. my wife loves the kitchen. She rates timeshares primarily on the quality of the kitchen. She said to mention that they have OXO kitchen utensils. I have no idea what that means, but she said it was important.

Welcome to one of my FAVORITE exchanges so far! Keep in mind I've been exchanging for over 10 years and we have been to some very nice places.

If you think waiting 2 years is bad wait until you have to wait another 4 years to go back!

You MUST go to RumPoint and stingray city and cemetary reef. Try to avoid Georgetown when the ships are in.

Hope you brought the digi-cam to take pictures of the unit and property. If you do go to the Fosters across the street I'd like your impressions of it. They really needed a market out there and I hope it is as good as the one in town by the airport.

Also see if you can get dinner tickets for The Barefoot Man dinner show. I think it is on Thursdays but check at the reef. The food is just OK but the show is a lot of fun. My son was just playing a barefoot Man CD we bought on our exchange in 2004 there this weekend.

and Yes I love OXO utensils. They fit my small size 7 hands very well.

      Lawren,

I did bring the digital camera. My kids already took over the unit, so it's quite messy. I'll tidy up and take some pictures for posting. I signed up for the broadband internet for the week for $10 CI. It's ethernet in this room and very fast. So, I'll post them as I take them.

My wife went to Fosters, I didn't go. She said it was great.

        jealous

I'm jealous, we had an exchange booked for the week of the 4th of july, but had to cancel once we found out that airfare from st louis would take 20plus hours. I just could not do it, $800 and 20 hours each way.. no thanks.

Hopefully I can get another exchange there, and work the air out better next time, possibly tacking it onto a FL vacation.

Good Deal! You will have maid service everyday there, to make-up beds, baths and trash removal. We left $3CI out on the counter each day. I didn't trust the envelope thing and wanted the person who actually tidied to get the tip.

Looking forward to the pictures. Grand Cayman ranks right up with STJohn in my "places I'd like to retire to".

Garrick we managed $650 RT from NY for Easter Break but that was over 2 years ago.

I'd probably think about FF if we do go again.

I THINK we are aiming for a TS4Ms get-together for Presidents week 2008. Although my DH oes not like to go away then. NY is prone to blizzards that week and he doesn't like to leave the house to itself in the winters.

              Retiring to Grand Caymen

We actually looked into the requirements for that. They're pretty steep.. You have to be in excellent health, have a self-paid health insurance policy that will cover you there, and a minimum income in retirement of 90k annually.

You also have to invest at least 300k in the islands, at least 200k of which has to be in real estate. The Cayman's have no want or need of anyone that might end up a burden on their native people and are very protective.

                BB,

                Happy Father's Day....
Sounds like your in a great place, having a great time, that's terrific...enjoy!!!

It seems this a very popular and praised destination. I have it on my list, but haven't gotten there yet....

I may have to move it up the list a notch or two.

When would be the best time to visit, and is there good snorkeling, and restaurants on the island?

                thanks.....

Boca, this sounds like Paradise. I din't know what Island you were talking about so looked up the name of the resort and saw some pictures too. How can it not be nice when you look out on the ocean but it makes it double nice if the unit is beautiful too.

Did you get your suitcase delivered? Looking forward to the rest of your story and photo images too.

                    emmy,

Thanks for the link...wow, this resort is so close to the ocean, you walk out your door and voilà.

This island is fairly close to NY, and yet, I haven't been there. Is it warm enough there to swim in February, or is April a better choice for visiting?

Angela we were there in April 2004 and the weather was absolutely delightful. I think February would be just as nice as the caribbean has an average temp of +/- 80 year round.

SO how many of us are going in 2008?

We drove around the island today. Went to the Pirate's Cave. Definitely stay away from that activity. My oldest son said the following, "everything about this cave is fake, except for the cave...." I couldn't stop laughing. That was the highlight of the trip.

The ocean views are amongst the best I've ever seen. Truly beautiful.

The pictures above are bigger in the photo section. 3 of those pictures are from the balcony of my unit. The last is of the poolside bar. We are going there now for happy hour.

Our room didn't get cleaned today because my middle son put up the do not distrub sign.... sigh. I didn't know they had daily housekeeping. Very nice.

The good news is they found my bag and they are delivering it as we speak.
