  • Local woman drowns in Aruba

A family from Winston Salem was vacationing in Aruba when the wife, who worked at Wake Forest University drowned while snorkeling at Baby Beach. I thought baby beach was very shallow (?) It brought back memories of my near drowning in Aruba but we were at the rough end when I was swept out to sea and had to be resuced by the tour operator.

They were accompanied by two other families of which one was a Dr. who tried to revive her but to no avail. I am an avid snorkeler but it goes to show you need to be aware of your surroundings.

The beach part is very shallow (2 feet?) but where you snorkel is 6 -8 feet inside the reef but gets very rough with a strong current depending on the tide right outside the opening.
I can see how it could happen.

Sorry for the loss of life and for the family of the victim.
