  • St. Goerge's club Bermuda Just returned

    Frank, or anyone else who has any questions regarding St. George's Club Bermuda just ask as we just returned from a great trip.

    We were in a very nice 1BR cottage with views of the water from BR and Balcony. Unit was on second level 23B and was in pretty good condition with renovated full kitchen, small but very efficient. All stainless steel appliances and had stove, full size fridge, micro, dishwasher and utensils for up to 4 people. BR had comfy king bed and nice furniture but no TV in BR. LR which was combined with kitchen was nicely furnished but not new and had pull out couch which we never opened since it was just the two of us. Some units had flat screen TV in LR but ours was old and about 21 inches but other than checking news and weather before going to dinner didn't use it much. Balcony was off LR and nice size with plastic table and four chairs plus one lounge chair. Bathroom was large with separate tub and shower, toilet, two sinks and what appeared to be white quartz counter, Not new but pretty good condition.

    Bermuda is gorgeous with very high standard of living and unlike most islands was very clean and very safe. Beaches were incredible and we took the 3 day pass for any bus or ferry and we saw most of the Island during the 3 days of sightseeing.

    Both restaurants at the resort were pretty good and we had no problem using the $120 at Griffins that is required at check in. Had one light lunch at check in with soup and salad with salad being great and cold soup we ordered was really bad. Other than that two dinners at Griffin's were very good and one dinnBlackbeard'sbeards overlooking their private beach was outstanding.

    Any questions just ask and I will try and answer them.

    Is it true that you can't rent a car there?

      When I was there, all a foreigner was allowed to rent was a scooter, but not a car. The bus system was fairly good, but I got the hang of the scooter OK.

          Hi Frank;

          Internet in room is not free. Charge is $50 for week for each computer or $10 per day. They have their own private beach (small but very nice) and free shuttle service to beach which takes about 5 minutes. They also have nice restaurant by beach and you can charge everything to the room. They sell bus/ferry passes at the resort for same price as at the ferry or bus terminal. Prices vary for 1 day pass, 3 day pass and seven day pass. We paid $28 PP for 3 day pass and also bought bus tokens 1 day to get to clearwater beach which was about 20 minute bus ride. Tokens for the same zone as St. Goerge's were $5 round trip per person. I am not sure what the cab fare would be from airport but it is very close to resort so probably around $20??? We stayed in Hamilton for one night which is further from the airport so we paid $35. Going home stayed at a B&B in St, Goerge's for last night and they drove us to airport at 7AM for free and it was about 10 minute drive.

          Also no car rentals allowed and I was going to rent a scooter but really didn't need it, and just used ferry or buses.

          Beaches are amazing and some are very close so didn't get to go to all of them. The resort beach was nice so we went twice during week. Also Tobacco bay beach is close by and gorgeous with amazing snorkling right by the rocks off the beach. We were able to walk there by going through the old golf course (closed) and even though I made a couple of wrong turns it took about 20 minutes to walk. They will also shuttle you to Tobacco. If you get a chance also go to horseshoe bay and Elbow beach but that would be an expensive cab ride or a long bus ride with a transfer required so we didn't go but saw the beaches which were on the South shore on our one day bus ride all the way to the dockyards on the other end of the island. Views from bus of the coastline were fantastic.

          If you have further questions let me know and you will love Bermuda. There are also some really good casual restaurants right in town which is an easy 5 minute walk. Two of our favorites were Wahoo and the Carriage house.

            Thanks for the full report - It's been quite a few years since I was on/in Bermuda. Is there much to do other than beach during the day? Enough to take up a week?

              We were there for 9 days and still didn't get to do many things we wanted to get to. For us this was mostly an opportunuty to see Bermuda as my wife was never there before so we spent 3 days sightseeing by the ferry system and busses. The rest of our time was spent mostly enjoying the different beaches and didn't get to spend time at all of them. Some beaches were primarily for snorkling were we saw tons of fish right offshore. Other beaches were picturesque and relaxing for swimming and sunning. We also went to a few historical sites as Bermuda has a strong history with England and the USA with historical ties to both the revolutionary and civil war were the confederate army had a base to get arms shipped past the Union blockade. There is the oldest protestant church right in St. George's which was built in 1610 as well as an old fort in St. Goege's (didn't visit) and several more forts one of which we visited at the naval dockyards which also included a dolphin habitat.

              For those who are into sports they have several world class golf courses ( I think there are 7 on this small island), tennis, crickett, soccer as well as all water sports such as sailing, fishing etc. etc.

              However more than anything bermuda is a lush beautiful island with great friendly people, great food and while we were there we had outstanding weather every day.

                Just one thing you should be aware of regarding St. Goerge's Club. which I am including in my review over on TUG.

                My only complaint was their stingy policies on replacement of anything in the unit. They gave us 4 bath towels and 4 beach towels which they will not replace until your mid week cleaning. This is the first beach resort that I have ever been to that does not have a beach/pool towel hut where you can not get fresh towels every day. We always take a morning shower and then another shower when we get back from the beach and four towels for 2-4 people (unit sleeps 2/4) is ridiculous. Fortunately we had a balcony and no rain so we dried all our towels outside every day. They also have the same policy regarding replacement of soap. Shampoo, conditioner, etc. As a matter of fact those items are not even replaced mid week cleaning. On top of that they charge you an additional $22 for the mid week cleaning and another $22 for cleaning at check out. These charges apply to everyone including owners and exchangers and if I were an owner paying over $2,000 annual maintenance fee I would be even more PO’d.

                Otherwise we were extremely happy with our Bermuda vacation as previously stated.
