I have a co-worker going to costa rica on 4/12-4/21 and she's interrested in the pros and cons of the pacific side and caribbean side. What are the big differences? she'll be renting a car and will it be easy to travel between both sides of the coast.

Pacific side is not the turqoise blue water of the Carib side. The Carib side can have a bit more mosquitoes.

Tell her to be careful with her rental car. Never ever leave anything of value in the locked trunk. Petty thieves are commonly looking for tourists to prey on. So do the local cops...watch out for speed traps. I've been a victim of both kinds of thieves in CR.

Ken I know nothing about flying internally in CR, but if your friend wants a taste of the Carib side without renting a car and driving over there, I have a suggestion. One time when I was in CR there is a tourist info office in the main plaza that also serves as a tour booking office. I was going solo, and I booked a group tour and paid a small single's supplent to go on a 3 day/2 night trip to Tortuguero National Park. It was phenomenal...I had my own little cabin with my own bed, and all the meals and drink including local beer was included. Got to do some great rain forest hiking and saw a 400 lb turtle nesting on the beach there. If your friend Googles around she might even be able to research and book such tours in advance. Edited to say...just found it, I recognize the photos:

        My other "must-do" tips:

Rainforest Aerial Tram outside of San Jose on the road to Limon

        Arenal Volcano

        Tabacon Hot Springs

(those three would require a car to get there)
