Looks like Jamaica is starting to get hit pretty bad and the stormis going to go the whole lengthnof the island.
Then it appears that the Yucatan is going to get a direct hit at possibly cat 5. Keep all of those folks in your thoughts.
Right now the path seems to be shifting a little to the south but Playa del Carmen and Cancun will still get pounded.
We are booked for Grand Mayan there in early November so we have been watching the path predictions...

Probably all my fault for buying at Morritts this year. I seem to have that effect on certain caribbean islands.
There's a rumor that it was you who caused the natural bridge in Aruba to collapse.

      Jim

Unrelated, except by their tragic nature, we have family in Peru whose town has been devastated. We are taking up a collection for them.
Sorry to hear about your family, and the town. I hope that everyone escaped injury.
      Angela

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Yes The natural bridge in Aruba collapsed just days after we had walked over it.

and Ivan hit GCM the summer of 2004 which is when we were last there.

Praying for Jamaica, GCM, and Cancun.

I just saw this on the weather channel:

After Jamaica, Dean's forecast track takes the powerful hurricane south of the island of Grand Cayman on Monday. Although not a direct hit, the Cayman Islands will deal with battering waves, high surge, and rainfall amounts on the order of 4 to 8 inches with some totals nearing a foot of rain.

            National Hurricane Center

This latest update does not sound good for Morritt's. They are expecting sustained winds over 180 MPH and a storm surge of over 20 feet. It sounds like everyone has been evacuated except for those providing for the security of the resort.

We have never been there, but I can do the math. 20 feet is not good for a beachfront resort. If the eye goes to the south, then Morritt's could take a direct hit with the strongest winds, both counter-clockwise and moving westward, toward the outer band of the storm.

As for the Peru disasater, it is winter there, temperatures in the 40's, and nothing is up and running. There are bodies but no way to take care of them. All of our family seems to be accounted for. Other than money, which my wife's cousin's wife (I think I got that right) is collecting for her family, there's not much anyone can do for them right now.

How awful and isn't this only the start of the hurricane season right now? We had a little earthquake the other day but I saw the one in Peru on YouTube and it was frightening next to what we had here. So many disasters everywhere.

                !!Cayman Update!!

Bear in mind that the storm has not passed and the winds from the tail
of the storm can be as severe as those that precede it.
Also, rainfall reports will vary in different parts of the Island.

Dean is now about 100 miles to our South and all is well. We have had some
strong squalls over the last few hours, but nothing worse than that.
Undoubtedly we will be getting more of them, but I think it is safe to say
that the worse is over, and we should see a gradual improvement over the
                next few hours.

As soon we get more reports we will certainly pass them along.

                  Please considering helping Cozumel

Cozumel took a hard hit with Wilma, and now Dean is going to whack Coz hard. Please consider donating to the Cruz Roja, the independent (not government-funded) Red Cross on Cozumel island in the Yucatan. USA efforts are coordinated effectively via the volunteer efforts of Deb Bollag, a friend of mine in NY. She's also a diver and frequent visitor to Cozumel and has developed such a love for the people there. So please consider helping this worthy cause at this time of great need.

Message from a friend who will stay put in Grand Cayman just as he did for Ivan.....Good luck Cayman Islands and all....we are praying for you.

                    Hi Friends,

Sorry for the rather impersonal method of saying Hi but time will not allow personalized greetings.

Hurricane Dean is bearing down on us and will be here within 24 hours.

This “thing” has been aimed at us for the past 5 days however it is now reported, as it nears Jamaica , that it is slightly changing from a WNW to a due W direction. If true and this holds we may, just may, get a 30-50 mile miss by the center—which will probably be a Cat 5.

A 30-50 mile miss will mean winds of 100-150 mph and some very high surf but probably NOT the devastating surge that we had with Ivan.

The house is completely boarded up, ice is made (that’s kinda fun) and supplies are laid in for about 2 weeks. That depends on how many friendly neighbors we inherit however everybody can stand to lose a few pounds so….what the hell.

We have the Gen Set ready with gas and oil for a week however that will give us refrig, freezer, a few lights and fans. No A/C or water. Also no telephones or computer which is why I chose to write while waiting. We will not be out of commission forever and I would hope some form of civilization, as we know it, would return by Thanksgiving.

My cell phone may continue working…it depends on the survival of the cell towers. (345)

Our new doggie, ......., is hanging in just fine but does not understand why it is dark all the time. When they shut down the power it gets worse.

We are (hopefully) prepared for the worst and hope for the best.

                    Stay healthy,

And the follow up.....they are fine....looks like they made it.

                      Hi Again Friends,

Thank you for the kind concerned replies.

We were very prepared and hoped for a 50 mile miss to the south.

It started big time around 1 am which was a little scary however, for reasons nobody forecasted, DEAN never got closer than 100 miles from Cayman.

                      Lucky us!

Water has been off since Sunday afternoon but electricity has stayed on. I think we are “out of it” almost as winds are a calm 40 mph. Maybe even get water later today.

Again, thank you for your concerns and prayers.

                      Love,

Glad to hear about the folks in Cayman Islands, sounds like they dogged the bullet. I'm sure it was scarry and not very pleasant but glad that the brunt of the hurricane missed them anyway.
Looks like Cancun and Playa del Carmen will not get the worst of it either. They are now saying it will make landfall quite a bit south of them although they will still get tropical storm winds and probably alot of beach erosion also.
The spot where it will make landfall further south is much more sparsley populated but the people that are there are probably less able to deal will the effects because of their structures etc.

Morritt's latest update said there is no major building damage. There is dock damage and a lot of cleanup. The power was still off, but they were asking the staff to report back to work this morning.

                          So, 0-for-1.

Now can we all stand 60 more days of hurricane season?

We got lucky as did Cancun.

Guess for a Cat 5 storm it was lucky all around that it didn't directly hit much hghly populated areas. Jamaica also kind of got a skimming and while there was some damage to the southern areas of the island it was not nearly as bad as it could have been. The Cancun and Playa del Carmen areas seemed to have fared pretty well and are doing cleanup now and expect to be business as usual very soon. I feel bad for the poor folks in southern Yucatan where it cam ashore but so far I have not heard of any deaths caused by the storm there.
But as Lawren said 60 more days of the hurricane season, so hoping that this was not a sample of things to come!!!!
