Has anyone been to the Carambola lately? I understand the resort is converting to a Renaissance hotel (Marriott). Have the timeshares been renovated? Thanks for any information you can provide.

It's been awhile since I've been there. I doubt if there's been renovation, they were 'renovated' when they were turned into timeshare at the beginning of this century. Sunterra only ever sold 5% of this resort before they sold it during their Chap7. There's only like one or two buidings that were 'converted.'
A summer float EOY just sold on eBay for $311. I like the place a lot, but the relatively high MFs put me off, plus it was being sold by an Ochoa.
Were you an owner or exchanger there? Are all of the timeshares "garden view"? Thanks.

We are in the process of trading our suite and standard room at St Croix (HOTC) for three weeks of standard rooms (as opposed to a standard and suite for two weeks). Even up exhange as maint. fees would be the same. They would take suites and double the maint. fee based soley on sq. footage. We're never in the room anyway but love it there so much so thought we'd go ahead and get the extra week instead of the extra roominess.. We only paid 500 bucks for our suite on ebay and they sell them for about 6 grand. Last time we were there...last year, there were a ton of folks looking for weeks in early March or so. When will you be there?

Hotel on the cay is like an old hotel on its own private island. Rooms are nothing to talk about but the location is everything. You can see pictures of it in my photos on this sites photo server.
Out of the 29 timeshare ownerships we presently we own this is one of our favorites. We have owned some nice Gold Crowns and 5 star resorts but both my bride and I really enjoy this resort and the staff and the area.
We like the Terrance area which makes for a huge open air "Family room" meeting place and the free computor use. It is a little more laid back type of uncrowded resort and area were you are treated like a person and not like just a number compared to the bigger resorts. There are no Cruise ship crowds to contend with at the resorts pool or in town.
Franks pictures are very good but IMO they really can not catch the true feeling and essense of the resort or the area.
The units are serviceable but the units cosmetics on a scale of 1 to 5 are IMO about a 1. But the setting and feeling on a scale of 1 to 5 are in MO a 6 or 7. We did a tour of the fancy timeshare and the average view of those Studios and one bedrooms were very nice veiws but IMO overall are not as nice as the HoT C's.
We own 3 weeks at the Hot C, weeks 4, 5 and 11.
We are allowed to do interenal trades at no cost with our prime weeks and can also roll them over into the next year at no cost.
Last year we took our week 4 and did a internal trade for week 6. We then rolled our weeks 5 and 11 from 2007 to be used as weeks 11 and 12 for 2008 to meet up with Sandcrab (Al) and his lovely bride (Calipso) Katie. Al said he was going to be there for weeks 10, 11, 12. He said that he is going to rent a couple of days in week 10 for the St Criox Styled St Patties day.
We will see what happens by this December with our regular weeks 4, 5 and 11 for 2008. If they do not rent out then we may and useweeks 4 and 5 in 2008 and again roll week 11 into next year or reserve a differant prime week if requested.
The only week we can not grab as a internal no cost trade is a week 7, but thats ok as we own fixed week 7 in West Plam Beach. We also own a fixed week 7 for a 2 Bedroom at the Top Sider in the Florida Keys that we just made a deal for about a month or so ago. We also have a week 7 floating ownership week reserved at our Key Largo resort.
Next Saturday Sept 8 we leave to stay at the Lindo Mar Resort in Puerto Vallarta and return late in the eveing on Sept 18. All units there are ocean front units. This is a older smaller (about 65 units)Gold Crown resort that has a type of comfortable feeling that I do not get from the Super Mega Mexican resorts. We using this as our 43rd anniversery trip. We are really looking foward to our first trip back to Mexico in several years. We traded into The Lindo using II for the first week and RCI for the second week.
We also now have future access to the Lindo Mar two bedroom units for weeks 1-52 through our 3 ownerships in our 2 bedroom 2 bathroom Imperial Hawaii World Wide Vacation Club units we bought this year.
One word of caution while at the Hot C. Do not admitt you are a friend of Big Frank or Sandcrab. Better yet dont even admitt you know then or that you have even heard about them.

Bruce you left out the part that all the maids have the hots for you. BTW You should write a review.
Having heard that Bruce is going to be in St Croix weeks 11 and 12, we are trying to trade our weeks 11 and 12 for a snake infested hut in Rangoon. That should get us as far away from Bruce as possible.D Besides we know that while Bruce is at HotC, no one else will get any made service.

I was changing some Sunterra resorts in the database and came across The Carambola in St Croix. I usually check the websites to make sure they still link up and when I checked this one it confirms the change to the Renaissance. It looks beautiful!!! It does not state when the change is effective, however; the new spa opens in winter 2007.
It is not in the Sunterra site either.

It really does look very nice.....Golf course, spa, palm tress, beautiful beach. I wish I were there, right now!

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.
