  • Morritts and Gustav

since we have so many owner's here I thought I'd post the link to the Morritts site for updates: Morritt´s Resorts | Latest News

The resort is closed due to lack of electricity (the poles are down, not just the lines) and it looks as if we have dodged another bullet ala Hurricane Dean. Of course there was a special assessment then and the way things go with Morritts I would be very surprised if there wasn't one for Gustav.

Gustav swells to dangerous Cat 3 storm off Cuba By MAURA AXELROD, Associated Press Writer
    1 hour, 22 minutes ago

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands - Gustav swelled to a fearsome Category 3 hurricane with winds of 120 mph (195 kph) as it shrieked toward the heartland of Cuba's cigar industry Saturday on a track to hit the U.S. Gulf Coast, three years after Hurricane Katrina.

Gustav swells to dangerous Cat 3 storm off Cuba - Yahoo! News

The storm already has killed 78 people in the Caribbean and the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said it had become the second major hurricane of the Atlantic season, following Bertha in July.

Cuban state television announced that all buses and trains to and from Havana were suspended, as was ferry service to the Isla de Juventud, the outlying Cuban island next in Gustav's path.

Authorities announced they were prepared to "protect" the 20,000 tourists in Matanzas province, which includes the famous beach resort of Varadero.

Gustav rolled over the Cayman Islands Friday with fierce winds that tore down trees and power lines.

At first light Saturday, Associated Press journalists found that Grand Cayman island was spared major damage. Big surging waves pounded at the island, but there was little flooding, and wind damage was limited because islanders had removed signs and other items that could blow away.

"The wind was a little nerve-wracking, the howling. But it turned out OK," said Meagan Call, who rode out the hurricane in her hotel room. She had come to George Town from the U.S. Embassy in Jamaica to assist U.S. citizens here.

Most tourists had fled before Gustav arrived. Dan Waters, general manager of the Marriott Courtyard in George Town, said the number of guests dropped from 200 to just 34, and they were stayed in second-floor rooms overnight.

There is also a Morritts forum. We had extended them the opportunity for an HOA forum here but they declined: Morritts Tortuga and Grand Resorts Forum :: Index

    Hurricane Gustav

    August 30, 2008 2:17 p.m. EST

    IMPORTANT UPDATE

Dutch Hoffmann reports that the resorts continue to be closed to all inbound arrivals.

The front desk at Morritt’s has been inundated with telephone calls inquiring as to whether check-ins will be taken on Saturday or Sunday. Please be aware that should you arrive at Morritt’s you will not be allowed to check in. You will have to find alternative accommodations on the island until such time as management opens the resort.

Mr. Hoffmann reported that even though electricity has been restored somewhat to the East End, his staff has not had ample time to inspect each and every building, unit and the property as a whole. Until such time as this can be accomplished, he and his staff will not be able to ensure the safety of their guests.

Mr. Hoffmann requests everyone’s cooperation and patience in this process and once management feels secure that this has been accomplished, the front desk will open and receive our owners and guests.

Please remember it has been less than 12 hours that Hurricane Gustav, a category 2 hurricane, moved over Grand Cayman.

Again thank you for your patience.

This is so sad. It was just beautiful there in July. I hope they get back on their feet again soon.

          Excellent News for all!
Looks like the Grand pool is the only one that requires more work to open. "Dig out the bar area"? and of course Mimi's.

          From the Morritts site:

Morritt’s Tortuga Club and Morritt’s Grand Resort will re-open at 12 noon on Monday.

We will still be cleaning up and repairing damage but most units and the Park and Premier pools will be open.

It will be several more days before the Grand Pool is open. We must drain and remove a lot of sand and dig out the bar area before we can check the pumps to determine if they are working properly.

We do not have a timetable as to when the dock and Mimi’s will open again. It appears the plumbing and electrical have sustained quite a bit of damage in addition to the need to replace sections of the decking that have been destroyed.

I will give a full report tomorrow including more detailed information of the damage, how our staff responded to the challenge and how fantastic our owners and guests were before, during and after the storm.

Thanks for keeping all of us in your thoughts and prayers it is nice to know so many people really care.

            Post Gustav

            Good Morning Everyone,

The clean up work continues in full force this morning. Our staff is presently clearing the large debris on the beach and the beach cleaner will be here this morning to comb the beach and remove smaller pieces of debris.

I will be meeting with one of our contractors at noon to ascertain the extent of damage to the dock and to begin the repair process.

Tyson Roofing was here yesterday and arrangements have been made to begin roofing repairs.

The Park and Premier pools are open. The pool bar at the premier pools is also fully operating. We continue to remove sand and debris from the Grand pool. The ocean side of the Grand pool has been dug out and the equipment will be put back in place today or tomorrow.

The damage to property is as follows:

            1) Major repair work is needed at the dock. We have recovered most decking sections that were blown out by the storm but they are not usable. There is damage to plumbing and electrical. All lighting has been destroyed. There has been damage to the Red Sail building such as doors blown off and some large holes in the wall. All roofing seems to be in place although we have not been able to look at the roof over the ocean front section of Red Sail. Temporary repairs will be made as soon as possible to get both Red Sail and Mimi’s dock bar open. At this point we will use plywood to repair the flooring until the decking product can be located and shipped to the Island.

            2) Damage to the roofs consists of some torn sections of the metal panels and some other minor damage. There is no matching roofing available here in Grand Cayman but temporary repairs will be until the product is received by our roofers.

            3) There has been a lot of damage to our landscaping. We lost several trees including the large breadfruit tree at the entrance to the Premier pool. The small Palm trees along the beach may not survive but the larger trees seem ok.

            4) Blown sand, small tree limbs and leaves littered the property. Our landscaping department is in the process of cleaning the grounds.

            5) The tennis court fencing has been damaged and may not be repairable.

            6) The shopping centre weathered the storm well and only very minor damage to roofing and blown debris occurred.

            7) The desalination plant and sewage treatment plant are fine and working properly.

            8) Although the seas came up to the oceanfront buildings no water penetrated any of the ground floor units. We did have some leaks and drywall damage but again the damage was minor.

Our staff did an outstanding job preparing the resorts for Gustav’s arrival. It is a testament to their hard work and commitment that so little damage was sustained.

We had over 100 guests at the resort and others in shelters during the storm. While the property was being secured several meetings were held with our guests to inform them of the storms progress in addition to reviewing our emergency procedures and letting everyone know what to expect during a hurricane. All guest information a was sent to Global Resort Management Inc. in Largo, Florida as a back up to systems here in Cayman. Everyone weathered the storm welland is safe and sound. We did not have as much as a stubbed toe reported to us.

We had our last general meeting on Saturday morning after the storm had passed. Staff and guests were thanked and all guests including one who took the floor expressed that although they were very concerned before and during the storm they felt secure in our preparation and the safety measures that we put in place and thanked everyone. They realized that although a lot of work went into preparing for Gustav nothing was more important to the staff and management of Morritts than their safety and well being.

We have made some minor changes to our activity schedule over the next couple of days but by Thursday activities and entertainment will be back in full swing. Although there will not be a fire show and band this evening, Tuesday night karaoke and Wednesday evenings comedy show will take place.

You cannot imagine how hot and humid it is for our staff that are cleaning and repairing the resort. The commitment and dedication they have to Morritts is over and above anything any of us could imagine.

The resort remained open throughout the storm for our existing guests and we look forward to welcoming our arrivals today.

It is a beautiful day here, clear skies, beautiful blue waters, and warm air.

Amazing. Things don't look too bad.

I will ask one question though.... Why weren't the lounge chairs placed indoors somewhere?

Cheers to the Morritts resort staff for communicating with us throughout this hurricane.

Anyone offering odds on a special assesment?

I know places in Florida throw the chairs in the pool on purpose. They don't blow away, workers don't waste time moving them, plus the storage issue.

I hope Morritts makes it through the season OK this year. They've had enough action for the decade.

I live in Florida. Yeah, people still do that, but they really shouldn't. The furniture often damages the pool due to wave action from the wind.

We're anxiously watching Hurricane Ike as it nears here....
