Anyone have experience with doctors/hospitals on Grand Cayman? I am leaving tomorrow, my knee is out, I don't have time to take care of it here tomorrow before I leave (it's passover, nobody is available anyway unless I spend a scillion hours in the ER, and I have no time). I am pretty sure (hopeful) I can get through the week with a knee brace and a cortisone shot -- anyone had any experience with medical facilities on the island?

Yes, I had a mosquito bite that got infected. We stopped at a little clinic on the southern road into George Town, and the nurses there told me to go to the emergency room at the big hospital in town. It's called, cleverly enough, George Town Hospital.
You have to sign that you will personally pay for care upfront before they will put you on the waiting list. Then you sit in a little waiting room and wait...and wait...and wait...it was a long wait, but obviously I wasn't spurting blood or anything, so probably not a longer wait than I would have had in the U.S.
Eventually a doctor saw me. He was young and he didn't really examine my leg, just glanced at it and shook his head and said it would need more than antibiotics, that I would have to come back and have it drained (eeeeeep!) in a couple of days. (I was thinking, over my cold dead body would I have him stick a scalpel in my leg when I live in the greater NYC area and my usual choice is which world-class hospital is marginally better than another for whatever problem I happen to have.) Anyway, he gave me the antibiotic prescription, I took it around to the side of the hospital and went into the hospital pharmacy there, got it filled. I took the antibiotics and they worked, phew. So he did what he was supposed to do.
The hospital was modern and perfectly okay. I wouldn't have gone there for anything short of an emergency, though. The emergency room was more like a British clinic (yes, I've had a minor health emergency in London, too) than a big NY-style hospital. Everybody seemed to have very minor complaints--I still don't know why some of those people were there, they didn't look sick at all.
Also it took about nine months to get my insurance company to reimburse part of the costs.

Geez Louise!
Can I loan you my walker, my cane, various wraps.?
Seriously though. Ice and elevation should help. I am wearing a splint brace now and I'm sure you could pick one up at a medical supply place. Keeps your leg in a straightened position.
Call the airline and see if they can get you bulkhead seating.
There are worse places I can think of than seeking medical care in GCM.
I hope you feel well enough to enjoy your trip Avery. I know how much you were looking forward to this one.Lawren

I think that I would find it particularly difficult to concentrate on studying physiology with a world class beach mere feet away!

Originally posted by wackymotherYeah, it's not terrible. Are you sure you can't get into an orthopedist's office today, Avery? If you know what you need and it's an emergency, they will usually squeeze you in. My doctors don't close for Passover or Good Friday, as far as I know.
Well, Tim and Holly will have no trouble spotting me on the beach now

Thanks all. I am feeling ok in the brace, hoping for the best. If I need to, I'll hit the ER. Fingers (and knees) crossed.

On our February trip, a friend had to go to the hospital after falling on the property....... she had an examination and xrays which were negative - they wrapped her up and I think gave her a cane?????
It took several hours and they were satisfied with the care.
Luckily u r in a building with an elevator - and will be able to hobble over to the bar - it won't be so bad.
The turtle farm is not a big place....u can still go - plenty of benches...as long as u have a rental car, u will be fine.

So far, so good. In and out of the car is a bit difficult, and I could do without the tile floors... but the view makes it all better
