  • UK to have coldest winter in 100 years

Anyone planning to visit the UK this winter should have a look at this:

Britain facing one of the coldest winters in 100 years, experts predict - Telegraph

Even down here in the lower lying area sheltered from the worst of the weather by the Cotswold hills it's a bit chilly! Nothing like the -14 C in the scottish Highlands or the -11 C reported in central Glasgow in the past week or so.
Unfortunately, because we had several comparatively mild winters, none of the local councils seem prepared when we do get very cold periods as we also had last year. It'll probably take them 10 years to concede that indeed the winters are getting colder. By the time they make that acknowledgement, and get in the kit to cope with it, we'll probably be back to milder conditions again.

Sort of the same thing here. We've had a few mild winters and forgotten how bloody cold in can get on Cape Cod.......as I sit here watching it snow AGAIN.

We'd been predicted for a cold one in the upper midwest too, but so far it hasn't been too bad.

Is the Thames going to freeze over like in Orlando? I always wondered how it could be frozen so solid that they could have a winter carnival on the ice....

Unlikely. So much heat is absorbed by the building in London it never gets cold enough, for long enough, to freeze the river.

Actually, after I posted this I went and looked up info on the Thames freezing. Apparently it doesn't freeze now both b/c of the buildings, and because it's narrower and faster-moving than it was before the embankments were built. It hasn't really frozen solid since 1814.

I have a number of friends there right now. Guess they chose the wrong Winter to visit weather wise. One couple even drove to Scotland in this weather.

I remember one year, in Holland, that we had frozen snow on the beach and it looked to us, children, that the sea was frozen too. It probably wasn't because salt water doesn't freeze. This was a winter during or right after the war. I probably could look it up when there was a very cold winter in Europe. Most winters, lately, haven't been that cold because skating on the rivers or lakes was no longer possible every year.

I was back there this summer and my sister and I both remembered riding the sled all the way down from the higher part of the road, down the steps to the beach and all the way down to the rough part of the sea. We thought they were frozen waves. It was fun and probably quite dangerous too but we survived it. A thread like this brings back old memories.

They were speaking to a couple from Australia on the news last night. They were loving it here. Enjoying 'proper winter weather' in their words. The fact that they are returning to the sun at the weekend may have affected their judgement.

Perhaps they were returning to my home town. We have 43oC predicted for the weekend and Monday, which converts to 109.4 degree Fahrenheit.

Only -24 F in Steamboat Springs yesterday. It was -5 at the top of the mountain though.

                          Cheers

Yesterday the forecast was for at least 2 more weeks of sub-zero temperatures in our area. Guess what - today the temperature has risen and a slow thaw has started. Latest forecast is for the thaw to last all week, with a slight risk of more snow mid-week and frosts overnight. The British weather, don't you just love it??
