  • Ireland? to do, see, eat..

    Hi,

I have to travel to Dublin for business and will have some time for myself - I have never been before and would love some suggestions on what to do & see and places to eat/hang out. I am leaving on Tuesday night of next week.

    Thanks!

I am staying at the Westin Dublin on College Green..

Thanks Garry! Please tell me some places to see, and visit... if it works out, perhaps we could meet for a drink! I think I will have to go back a few times over the next couple of months..

I found the HOHO bus a great way to get oriented around the town and see a lot at the same time.
Dublin City Hop On, Hop Off Bus Tour

And it was wonderful meeting Irelands Call and his lovely wife as well. Looking forward to seeing Garry and Marjorie again in June 2011.

Here is the link to ALL the Ireland/Dublin stuff

        A fabulous experience was Newgrange
Newgrange Ireland - Megalithic Passage Tomb - World Heritage Site

And the most moving of all was our visit to the prison....standing in the same place the people were shot -it was so unexpectedly personal for us.
Dublin Tourism - Historic Sites - Kilmainham Gaol

We stayed this past June 2009 at the Shelbourne on St Stephens Green near Grafton Street and Trinity College - enjoyed walking around the town and trying different pubs.

In 2011 we will stay at our home resort Fitzpatrick's Castle but truely enjoyed our week right in town.

Definitely the HoHo, it runs many hours, be sure to get your 24 hours worth by careful planning. Some stops, you will want to stay for hours, some just worth a quick look; depends on what you seek. Very convenient for accessing different areas of town.

There are some discount sites for Ireland, Dublin is expensive. I think Heritage Card is one?

Might look at TripAdvisor also for ideas, links to the discount sites, bus/train schedules, etc.

Your dollar will go much further these days ,plus because we built too many hotels ...prices are way down (ex Westin I guess...but no doubt you have a coprproate rate ). Also in our last Budget the governmet reduced the excise duty on alcohol...so the more you drink the more you save ..hic !

Wow thank you for all of the wonderful recommendations.

I should have more free time my second or third trip, so hopefully I will get to know the area a bit on my first trip and make the most of my business obligations... not so bad if you ask me !!!

Pat - that pub looks fantastic ! The bar crawl also looks very interesting.. it'd be nice to wonder the streets a bit.

Garry, I will send you a mail when I am in town!

Should of course read "corporate rate "

I do have a corporate rate on the Westin.. I don't recall exactly what it was but we usually get reasonable rates.. the flight on the other hand was very expensive, but I am sure there is some kind of rebate for the company factored in somehow.

I had not planned on getting euros before I arrived. Should I do that? I was hoping to use my corporate Amex for most expenses though I know I will need some money too..

Can I pick up a cab right at the airport to get to my hotel? Can I pay the cab with a credit card?

Looking forward to saving lots of $ at those pubs

Amex will be fine in most "posh" places but is not so popular here in Europe .Visa/Mastercard widely accepted . ATMs will give you plenty of euros at a good rate . Cabs aplenty at airport , but very few take cards .
So you will need around 25/30 to get you to Westin .Best get some euros..guess your will be using them for cabs to get to your office (unless your are going to the IFSC , which is walkable ) G
