  • One week in London--London pass with travel or Oyster card?

We will be in London at Sloane Gardens Club of a week in May. This is only our second time to London (and the first was only for 2 nights). We are considering doing one or two daytrips to Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon. I've been doing some research on the London card with travel, but it's pretty expensive (137 pounds per adult for 6 days, plus one extra day of free travel). We were to the Churchill museum and the Tower of London on our first trip.

I'm thinking the Oyster card will give us more flexibility in terms of travel within the city (the travel add-on portion of the London card amounts to 47 pounds for 7 days--not sure we would exceed that using the Oyster card) and maybe just a 3-day London pass for 68 pounds.

Looking for some advice from the London experts on this. Any other advice would also be welcome.

We've found that for us buying the oyster card for only the "inner city" works best. After 9:00 a.m. tickets to longer destinations are half price, trains are frequent, and we felt we were saving quite a bit of money by buying those tickets--2nd class--individually during the hours between rush hours. If you have time left on your oyster card, you can get the amount refunded at Heathrow as you leave.

If you get a Paper travel card for use in London at a Railway station, there are lots of two for one offers it can be used for including admissions, meals and other tourist activities.

If you go to trip advisor and search for travel card or look at the FAQ, you can get a good understanding of Oyster and Travel Card. Another good site is Home | Transport for London.

Basically, the Oyster can have just cash or it can have a "Travel Card" loaded while the Rail Travel Card is a paper card that gives you the 2 for 1 offers.

Here's another site that talks to both systems.

Great advice. Thanks. I think we will get the Oyster card to travel from Heathrow to Sloane Gardens Club and then go to Victoria Station to check out what deals are on offer for the 7-day travel card. Too bad they don't have a 3-4 day card, as I think we will be making a couple of day trips out of London by train and would not really need unlimited tube travel on those days.

The woman who runs Slone Gardens will give you great advice on what to see and do, The Train is about 100 feet from the resort getting around. Let her know Big Frank from Timeshareforums says hello, We found London to be the best to get around but the most espensive area to visit.
