A little heads up about driving in Germany.

Firstly most cars are stick - it is pretty rare to find an automatic.

Secondly the cardinal sin in Germany is to just hang in the left lane. With no speed limits, it is a safety issue. It is very simple - unless you are overtaking you are in the right lane. Drives me nuts how drivers here just hang-out in any lane they want.

Salzburg is a must-do. Not only the city, but the drive there on the A8 is spectacular. With the Bayerische Alpen in the background the whole way, it feels like a kitschy postcard. If you get really lucky, you will get Foan which is hot wind that blows in the region and magnifies everything.

I would forget Prague. You also have to factor in border crossing but it is probably open now. I needed a visa when I was there in 2000.

    you'll have a ball.

I've been gone since Thursday so have some catching up to do

I do have a dumb question that was sorta addressed by TSJunkie. Are all main highway/roads autobahn-ish? No posted limit is a 'free for all' and posted limits are strictly enforced? DH was told when he was over there a year ago - pass and get over fast. And if you see a black car in the rear view mirror get over as fast as you possibly can, even if it means dropping behind a slower car because they come up incrediably fast.

I drove a shift for many, many years - and is what I learned to drive on. I am rusty but I am sure I'll remember fast.

Salt and ice mines?? Well, that is something I am going to research for sure!

The issue with really nice quality keepsakes is the the darn exchange rate. It just makes them way too expensive . We ran into the same issue in Paris last year.

Roads other than autobahns do have speed limits. Even autobahns do in places.
