Oktober Fest in Munich and Prauge

Im thinking about doing Oktober Fest and was thinking about the festivals in Bavaria and Prauge. It looks like I need hotel recommendations near the fun. I also wonder what other things I should consider.

October fest starts Sept 21 and ends Oct 6 in 2013. It also ends a lot earlier in the evening than I expected. On the night I went I arrived at 8pm. Many were leaving by that time which is good because otherwise the tent would have been full. Last call was around 11pm.

We went to the one in Munich quite a few years ago and it was great. It's amazing how they control the crowds which must be hard to do with 6 million people the year we were there. It is best to go early as the tents do fill up. The public transit system in Munich is easy to use.

Is it better to travel from Munich to Budapest or from Budapest to Munich. The stops would be Budapest, Prauge, Bamberg and Munich during Oktoberfest. Im reading that Budapest has a party called Budafest during the Oktoberfest. It looks looks like fun and visiting some of the oldest breweries in the world during party time sounds like fun.

Or, would it be better to visit as the festivals wind down because of the crowds ? Thanks for the replies.

Octoberfest is going to be crowded the entire time. I would probably prefer to end in Munich but would look at how the open jaw airfare looked and would be happy to go the other way if it saved some money.
