I'm not sure if it's kosher to post resort reviews here, but we just spent a lovely week at the Mondi-Holiday Mitterfels resort in Unit G41 (studio) and as I couldn't find much information on this resort in this forum, I thought I'd share my thoughts.
It seems like the resort is trying to get back to Gold or Silver Crown status. Older reviews that I've found are now outdated, as there have been a number of changes here:
1. Contrary to the information RCI provided us, the restaurant is now OPEN. Reasonable a la carte prices for dinner and offers a half-board option (breakfast and dinner, 18 euros per person per day) and a breakfast buffet (7 euros per person). We ate there our first night, as we had arrived after the grocery stores had closed, and the food was pretty good.
2. There are now two grocery stores: you pass through the first one upon first entering town. The second is just past the resort's main enterance -- practically next door.
3. There is now a 2 euro per person, per day "fun" charge.
4. Housekeeping service is now available for free once during the week on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.
Reception was friendly, our server at the restaurant was lovely and the chef came out to say hello during our first dinner. Our studio was small and the location was not ideal (it was as far away from the parking lot, reception, restaurant and garbage drop-off point as possible!), but the decor was charming and the kitchen was well-equipped. There were tennis and swimming facilities, but we did not use them. I think there was a charge for the tennis courts, but I'm not sure.
The Location:
Mitterfels seems to be a growing town, as construction was visible from the main road. Not quite the charming little village described below. We LOVED the Italian restaurant in town -- it's on the main road, features pizzas and traditional Italian dishes. Good wine, beautiful dining room, excellent service and a fantastic tiramisu! As the only German word I know is "danke," I was quite nervous about communication, but everywhere we went, we had no problems with language -- EVERYONE seemed to speak English.
It's within easy driving distance of a number of destinations. Passau, Regensburg, Straubing and Munich were all lovely. We did make it out to the Ludwig castles, but be warned -- it was a solid 3 hour drive and as fantastic as they were, I'm not sure it was worth the drive.
All in all, this resort was isolated enough to feel like we were getting away from it all yet close enough to major towns and cities to for some fun.
