  • How many countries have you been to?

I thought I had been to all but two countries in Europe - Cyprus and Belarus - until I came across the list of countries at www.travelerscenturyclub.org , an organization of people who have been to at least 100 countries. Overall, I counted 82 that I would qualify for at present, but have more to go in Europe than I would have thought. That is partly because they define ''country'' somewhat loosely.

I find that Cyprus will count twice, once for the Turkish part and one for the southern part. That trip is high on my list.

Greece already counts three times on my list, as Greece, Rhodes, and Corfu each count seperately, but I still lack one, Crete which also counts seperately.

While I have been to Italy many times, I have not been to the two parts that count seperately, Sicily and Sardinia.

My travel to Bosnia has only been to the Croat/Moslem portion, but the Serb portion, Srbska, would count seperately.

Kosovo counts seperately, which I guess makes some sense even though it is still legally part of Serbia, and I haven't been to Kosovo.

While I have been to England, Scotland, Wales, and Jersey, I have not been to three other parts of the UK that count seperately, Guernsey, Isle of Man, and Northern Ireland.

Corsica counts seperately from France, and Spitsbergen from Norway, and Kaliningrad (formerly East Prussia) from Russia.

The two that I have no clue on, however, are Aland Islands (Mariehamn) and Lampedusa. Anyone have a clue where either of those are?

Wow! Carolinian, I am impressed. My wife and I lived in Germany for 3 years and traveled a lot, but we didn't visit any where near the countries you have. Now, with kids, we believe the kids should see the world and it is our goal to take them overseas every other year. In 2004, we took them to Sweden, Germany, Italy, and Austria. In 2006, they went to Australia. Now, for 2008, we are planning a trip to England and Italy. Yet, the exchange rate is making us rethink our 2008 travel plans.

      I've been to:
France, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Germany & Spain on a Rick Steves tour. Went to Poland, Romania, Austria, & Czekoslavakia in 1986 before the demise of the USSR & would dearly love to return to see all the changes. Been to much of western Canada and Baja Calif. Visited some of the Caribbean islands on a cruise. I have been planning a trip to Scotland, England & Wales in 2008 but as you pointed out in another thread the dollar has gone in the toilet so I am rethinking foreign travel. It's really the pits, too, since we had planned to do a lot of world traveling once our children were on their own & now we find our retirement dollars don't get us very far. I'm looking at Asia as a possibility.

I can understand why Cyprus is listed as 2 counties as Turkey invaded the north about 30 years ago and declared their own government there. It isn't officially recognised as a country by anybody other than Turkey.
If Rhodes, Crete and Corfu are listed as seperate countries to Greece I think those compiling the list could do with lessons in both geography and politics. That makes as much sense as Hawaii being listed as a seperate country to the USA (although I have seen TV holiday ads for trips to the USA and Hawaii ?!?!)
Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man are right to be listed seperately as is the Channel Islands (not Guernsey alone).

Alaska is listed seperately, too! And for Canada, Prince Edward Island is listed seperately but not Quebec, which does have aspirations to be a seperate country, and certainly has more cultural differences with the rest of Canada than PEI.

I didn't know that there was any serious effort to make Hawaii a seperate entity again since the royalist pro-independence Home Rule Party swept the 1900 territorial elections there.

            Carolinian,

where's the country list on the www.travelerscenturyclub.com web site? I note that it's a dynamic site that changes its front page every time you enter, and also configures the links to appropriate ones (in my case as I'm in Canada right now I'm seeing Canadian web site links). So I wonder if I'm not seeing the same page as you.

Carolinian, Rick and I have not been outside the country yet and we are 51. We have not even been to Mexico, if you can believe that. So far, I have not had a desire to go much of anywhere. All of our kids have been to other countries, but we just stay in the good old USA.

Carolinian, I have a friend who is 54 and was a former flight attendant and is dropdead gorgeous and looks like a movie star. She now lives in Ohio and can travel all over the world for FREE with her United Airlines benefits. She would love to travel with a nice guy like you.

When I say she is gorgeous, I am not making it up at all. I have pictures. She was married to my famous brother-in-law for many years and they never had kids. He played around so much when he was on tour, well she just got sick of dealing with him and dropped him like the bum he is and has purchased her own house, moved away from San Fran and has a modest job.

She just needs someone to travel with, Steve.

Thanks yes, the .org did it. Was the original message with .com then you edited it? As I did a copy-and-paste from your original message.

P.S. For places you don't know, try google... The Aland Islands are halfway between Stockholm and Helsinki - I've sailed past them but not landed on them, so can't count them in my total. Lampedusa is a small Italian island south of Sicily...

Not having flown commercially until my mid thirties, I got a late start on exploration. All my travel is leisure (I don't travel for business) and all over the place, like throwing darts at a dartboard...

                        Some countries:
                        Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia

                        England

                        South Africa, Botswanna, Zambia, Zimbabwe

                        Japan

                        Australia

Numerous foreign islands in the Caribbean.

Of the places I've visited so far, I found the cultures of Eastern Europe/FSU and Japan to be the most surprising and interesting. Wish I had more leisure time. Exploring is fun.

Interesting list... I came up with 33. I decided to count Greenland even though it was just a stop over to refuel on a prop flight from LA to Sweden when I was 6 month old. My mom saved the post card with Eskimos on it and statement that we had been to the "North Pole". Maybe I'll make a century some day. I have never been to Africa, South America or the Antartic, so those are my goals.
Thanks to my sister, we own a leg lamp.

Nine in total. After Canada and Mexico, it's primarily European countries.
