  • Photos of a great timeshare in Italy

Just got back from Il Poggio. This was an RCI trade. Wonderful place, fabulous location in the hills of Tuscany. Highly recommended!

Il Poggio, Tuscany, Italy - week of February 24, 2007.

We only drove in Tuscany. Took the train from Florence, picked up a rental car in Chiusi, dropped it off a week later and took the train to Rome.

But the driving in Tuscany (we only drove the small roads not the A1) was very easy. Of course this time of year there was not much traffic. Hardly any tourists. Our only complaint would be that the Italian drivers don't stay on their side of the road. With so many narrow curvy roads they usually drive half way into the opposite lane most of the time. A bit daunting as you come around a curve and find a car half in your lane coming towards you.

Speeding wasn't bad either. Some of the drivers do drive fast but very few ever tailgated and they did pass safely. The province of Siena is cracking down on speeding and they have speed monitors on several roads. I've read that they will clock your speed and send you a ticket (via your car rental agency) if you violate the speed limits. Check out this thread on Slow Travel

We really don't like to drive while on vacation but even my husband, the designated driver, enjoyed driving the beautiful scenic roads in Tuscany. It's the best way to see the vistas and allows the flexibility to visit the small hill towns.

Several years we did a "girls" week, actually 2 weeks in Italy. We stayed in Assissi and I was the designated driver. I drove from Rome to Assissi and after you finally got to the motorway from the city it wasn't bad at all. The Autostrada was an experience, but traffic moved quite well and yes, Italians like their half of the road in the center! We loved Italy; I drove to Florence, Venice and all over Umbria...I'd go back again in a heartbeat. My friends say I am a fearless driver. Could be learning to drive in Manhattan at age 16 paid off.
