I had something of the opposite experience. While I was checking into a hotel in Krakow, Poland on the eve of the 2004 election, the desk clerk on seeing my US passport expressed concern about the US election in that he thought Kerry had been much too close to the communists. But maybe that is just the Poles. After all the only place I have actually seen ''Freedom Fries'' on a restaurant menu in place of ''French Fries'' was at a restaurant in a medieval house in the Old Town of Torun, Poland.

Yes, we're going to Scotland.

We were in Amsterdam shortly after Bush was elected. One woman stopped us on the street and asked how he got into office because she said she was confused. We said we were too and we didn't vote for him.

We are leaving for Italy a week from this Sunday. No TS's. We are doing a tour mainly because the other folks we are going with wanted to do the tour and for everyone except my wife it is our first trip to Italy. Will be gone 2weeks. 9 days and counting!!!

We're heading for 4 weeks in Portugal & Spain. We've been watching the Euro closely. Fortunately the dollar has only tanked ~.04 since we first booked.

On the other hand, I'm really angry about the UK airport exit tax! We could have easily gone through Germany for a connecting flight to Lisbon. Now, we have to pay the exit tax twice - once out to Lisbon and again back to the US. And, to add insult to injury, we purchased tourist class tickets, upgraded to Business class with our ff miles and have to pay the Business class exit fee of £80 (now ~$160 x 2 of us) instead of £40 tourist.

Europe

We went to Greece for over two weeks in October and are off to Prague, bringing our children and their spouses in a couple of weeks. For sure, we are avoiding the UK with the dollar so weak. It was barely affordable when we were there in 2004. Think we will stick to Italy, Spain and Eastern Europe til the dollar becomes stronger. Surprisingly I have seen some very good summer fares to Europe and the tickets I bought in September to Prague are actually now much cheaper with only 3 weeks left til we leave. Go figure.
