Info on buses/tube stations/"to-do" places nr Maida Vale
I went to London and Scotland solo a few summers ago. I stayed at Carlton Court in London via an II exchange. Here are some tips:
Carlton Court is located in Maida Vale, off the beaten track in a residential neighbourhood. I used a map to find several local sites worth visiting...Hampstead Village and Heath via the 46 bus on Hall Road (about 6 blocks south of Carlton Court on the main drag; you can take the 16 or 98 & transfer to the 46). Also conveniently located is the funky neighbourhood of Kilburn...and I found that Kilburn High Road tube station (exit Cambridge Rd) was a better option for passing by the Marks & Spencer, Indian take-aways, etc, on the way home. Another find in the neighbourhood at 269 Kilburn High Road is the Tricycle Theatre, home of live rep theatre and a wonderful cinema started in 1998 by Emma Thompson. I attended a theatre event and a movie matinee there...very enjoyable. They also have a photo gallery and a cafe...the Tricycle is a vibrant community centre that anchors the culturally-diverse area. A very architecturally attractive pub called Black Lion is right across the street.
One block south of Carlton Court on Maida Vale, you can pick up the 414 bus that goes to Harrod's Dept Store, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Nat. History Museum. You can buy a bus/tube pass for a 7 day week at a shop called Auto Trader across the street (costs £20.20 ).
Carlton Court is very conveniently located if you're flying out of London via EasyJet. Studying maps I discovered you can take the 139 bus from Abbey Road (just behind the hotel, intersecting Boundary Rd...8 min walk) to West Hampstead Thameslink, where you can take the train (£9.20) to Luton Airport (EasyJet's hub). Wait for the 139 bus (do *not* take the 189/wrong bus) in front of the small grocery stores on Abbey Road...do not cross Abbey or you'll be going in wrong direction to get to train station. Connections are a snap this way, it's inexpensive, and it's much better than lugging suitcases on the tube to get to Kings Cross Thameslink.
