We are going to a resort near Munich and one near Salzburg. Should we rent a car at Munich and drive to Salzburg and back to Munich? OR rent a car
at Munich for a week, take the train to Salzburg, and rent a car at Salzburg for a week?

Where can we check the train fare between Munich and Salzburg?

I think the main road from Munich to Salzburg is an autobahn. The recommended speed on an autobahn is 81mph, but, as far as I know, there are no speed limits.

Would you enjoy driving under these conditions?

You should be able to find the info you need at either of those sites.

Also, I have found that you often get charged more, sometimes a lot more, if you buy a European rail ticket in the US, rather than buying it in Europe.

Munich to Salzburg is not a bad drive, and driving the autobahns is a breeze once you learn the rules. German drivers do not drive slow in the left lanes, they move on over to let the faster traffic on by. I would much rather drive on a German autobahn than a US interstate.

I agree with Carolinian. Having lived in Europe, I know the autobahns are fine. German drivers are much better than American drivers.

IMO you should rent a car there is too much you will miss if you don't. Salzburg to Munich is about 150KM.

If we rent the car at Munich, does the rental car company allow us to take the car to Salzburg?

Sticker is cheap only a few dollars depending on how long you want it for. Some cars have it on there. Let them know you will be going to Austria and while you are going there be sure to do a day trip to Switzerland.

Yes, with most rental car companies, you can rent a car in one western European country and take the car to most other western European countries. Eastern Europe, and in some cases Italy, are exceptions.

Using a gold or platinum credit card, you probably do not need to pay insurance.

Most European cities are a pain to drive in, although Salzburg is not that bad.

The sticker is basically for taxes to pay for building roads.
